New Repertory Theatre, in collaboration with arsenalArts and Watertown Children's Theatre, revives its popular adaptation of Dickens' classic holiday story, which has all the trimmings of a lavish Victorian Christmas. The production offers a feast for the senses, ranging from a pre-show caroling concert to luxurious period costumes, from singing and dancing – the performers accompany themselves on over a dozen different instruments – to ghosts that fly through the air and evaporate into the London fog. For audience members of all ages, Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, now in its fifth year, is the perfect holiday celebration.

      I took my mom to see this play and we absolutely loved it. We have seen several versions of this story and this was an excellent one. The cast was spectacular! The small theatre and the low tech props were great; gave you a feel of really being at the scene. Some of the original music (this child) was great. The actors singing was some of the best I have ever seen and the pre-show concert was such a nice treat. Collapse

      A fun, beautifully-rendered interpretation of a great classic. The acting, singing and scenery were fantastic. My whole family enjoyed it - from the five-year old to the eighty-year old.

      Saw Sunday 12/6 preview with my family. It was dark, spooky, spectacular: a marvelous way to begin the Christmas season. The ending (as everyone knows) is upbeat -- Tiny Tim does NOT die, and the audience leaves the theatre singing -- but the storyline, true to the Dickens original, is dense, dark, throbbing; full of pain, tension, social commentary, black humor, and (surprisingly) surprise. This New Rep production is now in its fifth year, and it shows. It is beautifully staged, with lovely costumes, lavish sets, dramatic lighting. The direction is calm and competent. Paul Farwell is a magnificent Scrooge -- a much darker, more nuanced character than I'd realized -- supported by a well-practiced cast, including a number of kids from Watertown Children's Theatre, with whom New Rep has a working relationship. All in all, a fantastic show. Watertown may be a bit off the theatrical track, but in this case, at least, it's well worth the trip. Collapse
