BLO launches Opera Annex with Benjamin Britten's haunting favorite. A Governess arrives at a lonely English country house to care for two parentless children and something is very, very wrong. Wire-taught tension mounts as she gradually senses the truth....Evil has corrupted the children and she must fight it. Britten’s chamber opera will glue you to your seats.       It's not only the the staging, the lighting, the singers and the music that keep the audience off-center, both literally and metaphorically, in Boston Lyric Opera's production of Benjamin Britten's "The Turn of the Screw," though each do their part. It's the threat that builds throughout the performance that, at any moment, coherence may be lost -- and not just for the governess charged to provide safety for the children left in (abandoned to?) her care. Where and to what end does her need to protect them go? How do events of the past haunt those of the present? Who chooses what for whom in the end? A profoundly disturbing and haunting production, made the more liminal by its unorthodox setting in a cavernous, former armory in wintered-over Boston. Collapse
