A workshop with National Guild's Advocacy Committee Chairperson, Lisa Shaftel with examples of high-profile cases like Shepard Fairey and Jeff Koons.  How does the modern artist know where the line is drawn when it comes to copyright? What constitutes copyright infringement? How can you make sure your work (and livelihood!) is safe? Get a better understanding of copyright and how to protect yourself (and why you need to protect yourself) with Lisa Shaftel. She will walk us through the basics of copyright and infringement with interesting anecdotes and images (specifically AP v. Fairey and others) to ponder. Explained from the perspective of the creative working process, this is a great opportunity for artists and photographers to get practical information and to ask questions. A selection of topics Lisa will be covering: What you need to know about copyright, trademarks, derivative works and compilations? How to register your work and mark your copyright (and what are the advantages)?  How does licensing work? What about works made for hire? Public domain? Fair use and derivative work? Facts about the AP v. Fairey case? The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session. Light snacks will be provided.

Lisa Shaftel is an illustrator and scenic artist, and has been a Graphic Artists Guild member for 24 years. She was elected National Advocacy Committee Chair in January 2004, and again in 2006 and 2008. As National Advocacy Committee Chair, Lisa assists artists who contact the Guild for help with client/contract disputes, business practices and ethics, and attorney referrals. She educates creative professionals and keeps the Guild in the forefront of the industry on issues affecting artists’ rights, such as copyright and orphan works, by writing Congressional testimonies, Guild White Papers, and a regular column in the “Guild News”. She advocates for artists at Congressional hearings, at meetings and discussions with the U.S. Copyright Office and other organizations representing creative professionals.
