Literacise Interactive Children's Exhibit

The interactive and bilingual children's exhibit Literacise builds on the important connection between physical activity and learning. Literacise is inspired by Irene Smalls’ story "Jonathan and His Mommy." In the story, a young boy and his mother travel together through Boston’s South End neighborhood taking steps of all sizes. Literacise brings the book to life – and to kid-size scale. Children will be able to zig-zag, bunny-hop, and giant-step their way through the interactive exhibit. Literacy + Exercise = Literacise. Located outside the Rey Children's Room in the Johnson Building.

      My two children and I went to the opening of the exhibit and it was gorgeous and fun. The life size book is beautifully presented in English and Spanish. My 11 year old daughter enjoyed the snacks, hopscotch and the opportunity to recognize words in Spanish. My eight year old son loved running in and out of the pages and meeting the fluffy bunny. It was a wonderful experience and Ms. Smalls did fantastic job of melding an engagings story and interactive exercise! Collapse

      Saturday morning I had the good intentions of being on time for the opening of the long awaited “Literacise” exhibit. Literacise is a one-of-a-kind exhibit that brings the story Jonathan and His Mommy a book written by Irene Smalls,Little Brown alive in life-size panels that walk you through exploring its storyline in English and Spanish. Taking a deep breath, we exited the garage and ran through the rain in hopes to make the launch at the Boston Public Library - we arrived wet, but smiling to the Literacise zone. My little man was beside himself… he dogged in and out of the panels, ran up and down the isles, and matched one foot to the other and bravely tried his hand at reading and speaking Spanish – recognizing a few words he has learned from Dora the Explorer! Gabe was having a blast and soon I found myself laughing out loud and chasing him. Literacise indeed proved to be a place for us to exercise our brain and our bodies. Collapse
