Giacomo Puccini opens on a scene in Japan, early twentieth century on a flowering terrace above Nagasaki harbor. A young U.S. Navy Lieutenant B. F. Pinkerton inspects the house he has leased from a marriage broker, Goro, who has just procured him three servants and a geisha wife, Cio-Cio-San, known as Madama Butterfly. The opera presents three emotion filled acts taking us from the initial wedding ceremonies in which the young Japanese bride is chastised by relatives for having renounced her ancestors' religion. In the second act Cio-Cio-San waits overlooking the harbor with her now three years old adorable son Dolore (Trouble) for her husband's return. The final Act reveals the crushing truth that Pinkerton has returned with his American wife Kate, leading to the inevitable operatic conclusion of the fate of Madama Butterfly.
