The name sprang, they explained, from the notion that every individual is a planet. But the unique worlds that their tracks mapped out were not insular ones; as their Grammy-winning hit "Rebirth Of Slick" (Cool Like Dat) would prove, the Planets were primed to connect with audiences weary of the aggressive posturing of gangsta rap. Filled with literate lyrics, honey-smooth flow, and inventive arrangements, their albums Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space) (1993) and Blowout Comb (1994) redefined hip-hop, and set standards for the generation of soul poets and innovative producers that followed, as the new anthology Beyond The Spectrum: The Creamy Spy Chronicles effortlessly reiterates. The group first took shape in the early 90s, in New York City. Seattle resident Butterfly (aka Ishmael Butler) hooked up with Philadelphia native Doodlebug > (Craig Irving), who was a member of Philadelphia collective Dread Poets Society, and Ladybug (Mary Ann Vieira), a Maryland denizen of Brazilian descent. Like the name chosen for their band, the new handles each member adopted also reflected a universal consciousness. Insects stick together and work for mutually beneficial causes, Ladybug observed in Essence. Doodlebug added, Humans are supposed to be the most intelligent beings on the planet, and yet we can't seem to come together in a peaceful manner. Now working as Cee Knowledge, Doodlebug has been leading Philadelphia live hip-hop ensemble Cosmic Funk Orchestra since 2000. In addition Doodlebug is actively the CEO of the successful multimedia company 7 n a Crescent productions. Cherrywine is the new group from Ishmael Butler of the platinum selling, American music video award winning hip-hop group Digable Planets. Ishmael Butler was the lead MC, producer and main creative force for the group who experienced tremendous commercial success and critical acclaim throughout the 90's. He wrote and produced the top 20 single "Rebirth of Slick" (Cool Like Dat) whose fusion of jazz and rap is widely recognized as a seminal song in hip-hop history. Cherrywine represents a brave new form in hip-hop, melding 70's funk bass and guitar, 80's synth pop, the latest hip-hop- beats, and his unique lyrical delivery. The result is a one-of-a-kind sound that evokes Outkast, Parliament, Curtis Mayfield as well as Kraftwerk. Once again Ishmael has redefined the genre. Together, doodlebug and butterfly have teamed up to create a live underground hip hop review that includes a 3 piece band, a deejay and will perform songs from their respective solo careers as well as Digable Planets classics. "The Digable Planets presents: an evening with Butterfly and Doodlebug featuring the Cherrywine and CFO band" will be a great night of experimental hip hop, jazz , rock, and funk that will take the longtime loyal DP's fans back in time to their favorite DP moments as well as introduce them to the new sounds of the Creamy Spy Clique.
