The Coolidge Corner Theatre's Science on Screen series returns with a special presentation of Victor Fleming's 1941 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Victorian gothic tale, starring Spencer Tracy in the dual title role. In 1887 London, Dr. Henry Jekyll is a socially upstanding physician whose scientific experiments unleash a malevolent and uncontrollable alter ego named Edward Hyde. Lana Turner co-stars as Jekyll's loving fiancee and Ingrid Bergman as a luckless barmaid pursued and abused by the brutish Hyde. Introducing the film are John Durant, MIT professor and director of the MIT Museum, and Anne Harrington, chair of the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University. The pair will provide a fascinating window in some of the scientific and medical theories and debates of the era in which Stevenson's famously divided physician was born.
