  This was my fourth year seeing the Jose Mateo production of the Nutcracker at Brandeis. It's a streamlined version (thank you for cutting out most of the tiresome miming in the first act) that focuses on the beauty and simplicity of the story. The wonderful choreography emphasizes both the magic and the humor, though some of the dancers seemed very tired by the end (they all dance multiple roles) and there were a few slip-ups, I suspect because of exhaustion. True story: Midway through the first act, the Nutcracker comes to life as a real male dancer, clad in bright blue military-style jacket and traditional dancer's tights. Upon seeing this vision, the young lady behind me (6 or 7 years old?) exclaimed in wonder for all to hear, "I can see his penis!!" Several weeks after the fact, I'm still laughing! At least she knew her anatomy! Collapse

  The show was magnificent. The show was presented just a well as the cast performing at the downtown venue. I look forward to next year.
