Araya by Margot Benacerraf (Venezuela, 1959, 82 min.). A restored 35 mm print of Bernacerraf’s film, Araya, finally sees the light. Araya, a peninsula in northeastern Venezuela, is one of the most arid places on earth. For 500 years, the region’s salt was highly prized, but the workers were exploited and lived under harsh conditions. Filmed in stunning black-and-white, Benacerraf captures the life of the salt collectors and their backbreaking work, their stories underlining the harshness of the region—all of which vanished with the arrival of industry. While Beracerraf’s work isn’t well-known in the US, she received critical acclaim around the world, sharing Cannes International Critics Prize with Alain Renais’s Hiroshima, Mon Amour. After viewing the film, Jean Renoir told Benacerraf “…don’t cut a single image!”
