Summer is hot, but not as hot as Mary Callanan in New Rep’s production of Sophie Tucker The Last of the Red Hot Mamas. Known for her for her bawdy sense of humor and outspoken views on men and relationships, Tucker’s legacy has influenced comediennes and singers alike for generations. During her career, which spanned over seven decades, this gutsy vaudeville entertainer found popularity and fame with self-parody and suggestive songs like “I’m the Last of the Red Hot Mamas,” “The Lady is a Tramp,” “You’ve Gotta See Your Mama,” as well as her signature number “Some of These Days.”

      i remember sophie tucker from tv and her shows at blinstrubs in so boston and other venues this show is a good start but needs more between songs info and background chatter about her life and career... Expand

      i remember sophie tucker from tv and her shows at blinstrubs in so boston and other venues this show is a good start but needs more between songs info and background chatter about her life and career she had tons of short stories in her shows mary callanan is great but please add to this production also drop the hula number the show is short so it can take a good amount of additions to make it great i have seen similar shows about judy garland and also peggy lee in london and they were terrific this has the potential to be a great show please add to it soon Collapse

      In general, we enjoyed this performance, the second half in particular. It took a while for the performer to warm up and really get into the character; until then her singing was somewhat flat. We also felt it would have more effective had the early history of Sophie been revealed in the first half rather than later on. Collapse

      Once again, I say: 'Don't listen to the critics!' Did they expect Lady GaGa? This was a Sophie Tucker cabaret - and it was fabulous! Mary Callanan is extremely talented - I'm not sure she caught... Expand

      Once again, I say: 'Don't listen to the critics!' Did they expect Lady GaGa? This was a Sophie Tucker cabaret - and it was fabulous! Mary Callanan is extremely talented - I'm not sure she caught the essence of Sophie, but she was great. No matter. But why she wasn't in a blonde wig is the biggest enigma. Go see it and smile.
