The exhibition Souls, Photographs by Gerard Malanga features photographs dating from the early 1970’s, when Malanga worked as Andy Warhol’s assistant at the legendary ‘Factory’ in New York. Malanga’s proximity to the epicenter of a cultural and artistic revolution gained him unprecedented access to an array of celebrated subjects, including Keith Richards, Pete Seeger, Allen Ginsberg, Patti Smith, and Roman Polanski to name a few. Stripping away the formal elements of fame, Malanga’s portraits can be read and felt instantaneously, capturing and creating an unrivaled record of our time. Alongside these illustrious portraits, are images of friends Malanga has encountered during his nearly 40 years of taking photographs. With an ‘archival sensibility’, Gerard Malanga’s images portray an intimate, visual rendering of his subjects. Malanga’s uncompromising eye saturates these iconic portraits with powerful commitment and integrity.
