Melvin and Howard: Screening and Panel
March 2, 2010
Add Review/Comment
Described by Pauline Kael as "an almost flawless act of sympathetic imagination," Jonathan Demme's Melvin and Howard (1980) is a semi-fictional take on the true story of Melvin Dummar (Paul LeMat), an average guy whose life was turned upside down when he was made beneficiary of a $156 million will allegedly signed by millionaire Howard Hughes (Jason Robards). Mary Steenburgen earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her terrific turn as Dummar's first wife. After the screening, join filmmaker Demme, cinematographer Tak Fujimoto, and others involved in the making of the film for a discussion of the creative process, moderated by former New York Times film critic Elvis Mitchell. This program is part of the 2010 Coolidge Award celebrations honoring Jonathan Demme.
