Adam Marcinek’s “West Branch Pond Camps”, a series of black and white photographs on view this March at the Brookline Arts Center, depicts Marcinek’s month-long stay at the West Branch Pond Camps in Greenville, Maine. His photographs provide insight into the slow and simple lifestyle of the camp, capturing both a beauty and a loneliness that Marcinek experienced during his stay. Because the photographer is a Boston resident, Marcinek experienced a new way of living in the camp’s rural cabins. During his stay, he worked for the camp, cleaning dishes and serving meals. Each night at 9 o’clock the electricity would be turned off, throwing everything into utter darkness. It was a kind of living completely foreign to Marcinek, which at times left him uncomfortable and homesick. “I think there is a quiet sadness that does come out in these pictures”, says Marcinek, “they instantly become reflective––reflective of the quiet, and calm and mood of the place.” Another active part of Marcinek’s artistic career is his participation in “The Exposure Project,” which he co-founded with three other artists in 2005. The project provides exposure to both members and featured artists through an online photo blog and the creation of their own self-published photography books.
