April 25, 2010
Mahea Uchiyama, founder and director of the Mahea Uchiyama Center for International Dance in Berkeley, CA will introduce you to the beautiful art of Ori Tahiti, also known as Tahitian Dance. Ori Tahiti is a dynamic dance that stresses intricate hip isolations, grace, and stamina. In this two-hour workshop, you will learn a variety of dances, including ‘Ote’a, a stunning dance done to the energizing rhythms of a drum orchestra and ‘Aparima, a lively story-telling dance in which the hands play a vital role in conveying the story. You will learn hip circles, figure eights, and layered combination hip isolations, get a taste of Tahitian singing, and a solid sense of the cultural and historical context from which the dance evolved. Mahea Uchiyama is the director of two competitive Tahitian Dance ensembles, and has won numerous awards in dance, chant, singing and drumming from competitions throughout California and Hawai’i.
