"Stuck in a Lenny Bruce Time Warp" is a show conceived by The Meltdown Incentive Inspiration is derived from Lenny Bruce censorship, and the stigma around "colorful" language A varied collection of texts that touch on humor, sadness, shock, romance, grocery stores, beer, breasts, and more will be presented in an uncensored manner The texts will be wrought from the performers’ personal experiences, as well as famous poets (think Maya Angelou, local poet Lisa DeSiro), beat poetry, political satire, bizarre recipes, raunchy craigslist ads, prolific quotes (Lenny Bruce), and audience participation All music is improvised; the genres run the gamut from classical art song, sprecshtimme, blues, jazz, humorous motives from famous songs, to screaming metal World-renowned percussionist Ra-Kalam Bob Moses will join us for this exploration

“TNT! 2013 - TOTALLY NEW THEATER” GEARS UP FOR 5TH ANNUAL EVENT AS PREVIOUS TNT PLAYS FIND SUCCESS

TNT! - Totally New Theater 2013, a play development retreat for writers produced by local playwright Shari D Frost for Marblehead Little Theatre, is returning for its fifth annual event On Saturday, June 1 at 8pm, an evening of readings free to the public will be followed by the unique opportunity to meet the local and visiting playwrights and discuss their work Space is first-come, first-served at the theater on 12 School Street in Marblehead, and doors will open at 7:30pm

While new play development begins at TNT!, the process from page to stage is a long one Now as the program prepares to celebrate its fifth year, several of the projects begun over the past four TNT retreats are finding success and hitting stages across America

Alice in Black and White, by Robin Rice Lichtig (TNT! 2011), had its premiere at the 2013 Humana Festival of New American Plays in Louisville, Kentucky America’s largest and

internationally renowned festival celebrating the contemporary American playwright, this festival launches new plays onto America’s Broadway, Off-Broadway and Regional theater stages

Two Left(ist) Feet, One Last Dance, by TNT! producer and participating playwright, Shari D Frost, was selected this winter as one of ten national finalists for the 2013-2014 Playwrights’ Center Core Apprentice Program in Minneapolis Should Shari and this play advance, she will have the opportunity to fly to Minneapolis this summer to work with a Playwrights’ Center director, actors and dramaturg to further develop this play, in addition to partnering with the institution for a full year

Other ten-minute plays seen at past TNT! staged readings have made their way to festivals such as the New Works Festival at the Newburyport Firehouse Center for the Arts, and the Our Voices Festival in Wellesley

For more information about TNT! 2013, or other upcoming Marblehead Little Theatre events, go to mltlivecom or call 781-631-9697

Just when we need it most, Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus taps into the quiet yearning many of us share for simpler, more genial times with a celebration of the grand tradition of American song On June 1 at 7 pm in Newton’s First Baptist Church, the acclaimed 70-voice choir is joined by renowned baritone soloist Andrew Garland for “Simple Gifts: An American Musical Landscape,” featuring choral arrangements of classic American songs, such as “Saints Bound for Heaven,” “Shenandoah,” and Aaron Copland’s iconic “Old American Songs” Led by music director Michael Driscoll, “Simple Gifts” marks Saengerfest’s first non-holiday concert with a chamber orchestra and first with a male soloist With his rich, supple baritone, Garland is acclaimed in opera and song repertoire ranging from Handel and Mozart to Britten and contemporary composers The New York Times calls him “…a distinctly American presence,” projecting both sincerity and humor, and Opera Now claims, “His trump card is communication…the fine art of poetry in music has found a rare ambassador”

A startling juxtaposition of ideas: sometimes that’s all it takes to kick-start creativity How much easier it is to pick up a pencil when a teacher, instead of saying, “draw something,” offers the prompt: “draw a peanut butter sandwich resting on the ocean floor” At Maud Morgan Arts, an epicenter of creativity unto itself, the spring session features classes that provide more than prompts; these courses stretch the imagination across multiple mediums to send students galumphing down new avenues of artistic expression in the belief that all students can surprise themselves with their own art

During the April vacation workshop for 3rd-9th graders, "Print Your Fabric/Sew Your Project," Boriana Kantcheva and Mary Kenny teach students how to print their own patterns onto fabric using screen-printing inks Then students use the fabric to sew a pillow, an apron, a skirt, a tunic, a handbag, a set of curtains or anything else they can imagine In “Four Seasons/Two Masters: Spring,” a weekend workshop for adults, Pauline Runkel begins with techniques for arranging a floral display magnificent enough to paint, and then Jane Goldman guides students as they capture their bouquets in watercolor This two-day workshop is one in a series of four workshops, each highlighting the natural wonders of a different season

Finally, to keep the mix lively, Maud Morgan Arts welcomes new faculty member Roz Sommer, one of the 2nd place winners of Maud Morgan Arts’ 2012 2D Small Works Salon whose paintings were featured in a recent show at the Chandler Gallery, to teach two painting classes that delve dramatically into their respective mediums “Investigative Painting,” for children in grades 3-5, will introduce young artists to color mixing, pattern, texture, and composition through tempera paint, seeking inspiration from famous artists and diverse cultures “Painting: Line, Plane, Color,” will give middle-school students a solid foundation in acrylic painting, including lessons on observation, using a viewfinder to frame a composition, and various application techniques to get the most out of this unique medium

Spring session classes run for eight weeks from April 8 through June 10 April vacation week classes run for four days from April 16-19 Preschool open studio and adult life-drawing classes are ongoing Check wwwmaudmorganartsorg for specific dates for weekend adult workshops Maud Morgan Arts (MMA) is a program under the umbrella of the Agassiz Baldwin Community, a private, non-profit organization with a forty-year history of quality programs and services in the Cambridge community MMA comprises a full arts program of classes and workshops for all ages, the Chandler Gallery, and a collection of original art by noted artist and community resident Maud Morgan (1903-1999) The agency works to reflect the diversity and talents of the community, bringing people together to make art, share art, and support visual arts education

"Dar Williams, one of America's very best singer-songwriters Her songs are beautiful Some are like finely crafted short stories They are, variously, devastatingly moving, tenderly funny, subtle without being in any way inaccessible, and utterly fresh—not a cliché or a clunker in her entire songbook" -The New Yorker (Nov 2011)

"Seasons change, but Williams remains both ambitious and pleasingly plainspoken" -Rolling Stone

"A new generation of pop-folk enthusiasts lauds her as one of the genre's central figures" -Paste Magazine
"One of our most thoughtful singer-songwriters" -New York Daily News

Newton, MA - Beloved singer-songwriter Dar Williams is coming to Newton to make her debut with orchestra! Newton's New Philharmonia Orchestra, under the musical direction of Ronald Knudsen, will present "An Evening with Dar Williams" in concert with the New Philharmonia on Saturday, June 15, at 8:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Newton 848 Beacon Street, Newton, MA 02459 Reserved seat tickets at $3500, $5000 premium seating and $10000 premium seating with after-show reception with Dar Williams are on sale now on line at http://wwwnewphilorg or by calling: 617-527-9717 The First Baptist Church in Newton is wheelchair accessible For more information about New Philharmonia go to http://wwwnewphilorg

The June 15 concert is a fundraiser for New Philharmonia's Community Engagement Program and it is also Dar Williams's first concert with a symphony orchestra Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra Concertmaster Joseph Scheer, who happens to be Dar's brother-in-law, arranged Dar's music for orchestra and especially for this concert The New Philharmonia Orchestra, founded in 1995, is a 75 member non-professional regional orchestra based in Newton “Music of, by and for the people” wrote The Boston Globe This statement encapsulates the spirit of the organization

Dar’s first album of original material in four years which was released in April 2012 The CD was produced by Kevin Killen (who has worked with such giants as U2, Elvis Costello, and Peter Gabriel), and features special guests Shawn Colvin and Larry Campbell, and a remarkable set of musicians including Charley Drayton, Gerry Leonard, and Rob Hyman Williams presents 10 original compositions on In The Time Of Gods, which explores many of today's most challenging social issues told against the parables of Greek mythology The inimitable collection of songs includes some of the richest and most evocative writing of Williams' career She has just kicked off a national US tour in support of her new CD

In The Time Of Gods covers many relevant topics such as retaining one's moral compass, our personal responsibility in aiding to change the world, the politics of power, and following a guiding light in the midst of chaos The ceaseless turmoil in the world today is of great concern to Williams who is also a wife, mother and community activist Williams was inspired to return to the stories she was told as a child to see if the gods of the Parthenon would speak to her while penning songs for her latest release As it turned out, these stories and characters helped her make sense of our eccentric world and shaped the scope of the album Standout tracks on In The Time Of Gods include the album opener "I Am The One Who Will Remember Everything," "I Have Been Around The World," "Crystal Creek," "Summer Child," and "You Will Ride With Me Tonight"

"It was very intriguing to work with Kevin Killen and the musicians he handpicked for my latest album," says Williams "Kevin really was the alchemist behind the record Ron Hyman and I co-wrote four songs, so a lot of the album is based around our relationship There really is an epic setting for the album, I'm at a point in my life where I feel like people are flying higher and falling harder There is a grown up fairytale feeling to In The Time Of Gods It sparkles with simple and beautiful layers, and it's muscular in places and very lyrical in others It was a great service to my storytelling to have these fine musicians giving the arrangements so much strength and sophistication"

The great achievement of Williams' new album is it gracefully reminds us that wherever we are, whenever it may be, we are always living In the Time of the Gods It's not to say we are living in 400 BC Greece, but rather, as Williams notes, "We are evolving in time And that's what you're allowed to do with mythology – let it evolve and show who your Parthenon is now" Her latest narratives borrow from classic Greek archetypes, but she beautifully shows how flexible and expansive they are by easily weaving in her own personal experiences and insights Williams portrays a spellbinding contemporary interpretation of these classic ancient themes

One of the most lauded singer-songwriters of her generation, Dar Williams has been captivating audiences with her sheer elegance and honesty in her folk-pop songwriting since the early '90s As documented on her last album, the 2010 two-disc retrospective Many Great Companions, Williams’ growth as an individual over her almost two-decade-long career has gone hand-in-hand with her evolution as an artist She has toured with such distinguished artists as Joan Baez, Patty Griffin, Ani DiFranco, and Shawn Colvin, and recently became a regular contributor to the Huffington Post's Green Blog A dedicated environmentalist, Williams toured throughout the northeast visiting children's camps and planting bee gardens in summer 2011

Williams has released one live album - Out There Live (2001); seven studio albums - The Honesty Room (1993), Mortal City (1996), End of the Summer (1997), The Green World (2000), The Beauty of the Rain (2003), My Better Self (2005), and Promised Land (2008); one live DVD - Live at Bearsville Theater (2007); and Many Great Companions (2010) In 1995, two years after self-releasing The Honesty Room, she signed with Razor & Tie Entertainment, beginning a relationship now in its 18th year

New Exhibit

The Art of the Catboat
A diverse medium expression of the elegant Catboat design The Catboat, an elegant display of craftsmanship and beauty, exemplifies the spirit of the American boat design Joseph Keveney caught this spirit when he built three Catboat models from 1936-1942 Fortunately, his family has generously loaned his boat models to the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, thus becoming the catalyst for our new rotating exhibit, “The Art of the Catboat” We invited Cape Cod artists to share a variety of unique perspectives, inspired by the Catboat, to display their artwork at the museum’s newest exhibit, scheduled to open for a “sneak peak” during the school vacation week of February 18th-22nd The full exhibit opens during Cape Cod Maritime Museum’s 2013 season opening on March 12 th and runs through July 6th The next rotating exhibit, “Risky Business: Rum-Running on Cape Cod,” runs from July 10th through December 15th

Sneak Peek February School Vacation, February 18th-22nd Fun activities planned for children from 11-3 daily Museum hours Monday -Friday 10-4 during February School Vacation
