Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused is the ultimate "school's out" film It perfectly captures the high school changing-of-the-guard that occurs during the summer months, examining both the timidity of the incoming freshman, and the party-all-night attitudes of the newly crowned seniors
There are rites of passage for everyone in this summer classic: the freshman boys are tracked down and physically punished with cricket bats; the girls are exposed to verbal abuse and soaking by condiments, both by the departing senior class, while they have their own transition to deal with Some begin to exit the haze of their youth leading down the primrose path of higher education, while others are content to stay focused on the "higher" part of that destination A stoner version of American Graffiti, Linklater (Slacker, Before Sunrise) has us ride shotgun for the final day and night in the lives of this motley crew

Gathr Previews & The Regent Theatre Present "100 Bloody Acres," a raucous horror/comedy from Down Under
In 100 BLOODY ACRES, brothers Reg and Lindsay Morgan are struggling to keep their organic blood and bone fertilizer business in motion Their secret “recipe” for success (using dead car crash victims in their product) was a huge boon to business, but lately supply has been gravely low Months have passed since their last find, and an important new customer is now waiting on a delivery When junior partner Reg (Damon Herriman of Justified) stumbles upon 3 travelers stranded on a remote country road, he cooks up a radical solution to their problem, and a way of finally gaining the respect of his bossy big brother (Angus Sampson) But when Reg starts to fall for Sophie, one of the intended victims, things get complicated…
A bloody good time, the Cairnes’ brothers witty horror-comedy blends sly Australian humor, gory fun, and a clever storyline that gives “recycling” a whole new context
“They’re not murderers…they’re small business operators!”

Exclusive Area Premiere! One Week Only, May 24–30
One of the most highly anticipated films of the year, from the directors of Sweetgrass and Foreign Parts, LEVIATHAN is a thrilling, immersive documentary that takes you deep inside the dangerous world of commercial fishing Set aboard a hulking fishing vessel as it navigates the treacherous waves off the New England coast — the very waters that once inspired Moby Dick — the film captures the harsh, unforgiving world of the fishermen in starkly haunting, yet beautiful detail Employing an arsenal of cameras that pass freely from film crew to ship crew, and swoop from below sea level to astonishing bird’s-eye views, LEVIATHAN is unlike anything you have ever seen; a purely visceral, cinematic experience

7:00pm: Gum for My Boat (Bangladesh) 34 min

7:40pm: Splinters (Papua New Guinea) 90 min

9:15pm: God went Surfing with the Devil (Israel & Palestine) 84 min
About “Gum for My Boat”
An alluring documentary that touches on the redemptive power of surfing in Bangladesh This short feature tells the story of how a group of more than 30 boys and girls, many of whom are poverty-stricken street kids, are making a difference in their community and how the surf club they started is the catalyst for this change Due to a fearful, conservative culture, the ocean was once deemed off limits to these children, who now see surfing as a source of fun, escape, and even a way to make a living The film follows professional surfer Kahana Kalama (A guest on Fuel TVs series On Safari) as he works with Hawaii-based nonprofit Surfing The Nations and learns that sometimes surfing involves more than catching waves
About “Splinters”
Splinters, praised by ESPN for “reviving the surf film genre”, combines great on-wave action with high drama Restricted by gender, culture and limited jobs, a unique group of athletes contests for a national championship as a ticket off the paradise of Papua New Guinea A standout on the festival circuit since its Tribeca premiere, Filmmaker Magazine has called Splinters “engrossing and endlessly surprising”
About “God went Surfing with the Devil”
Since the year 2000, over 4,300 Palestinian and 1,000 Israeli lives have been claimed by the escalating conflict in the region The situation grew markedly worse in 2006, when Israel responded to the election of Hamas by sealing off the borders, ending the free-flow of people and goods Palestinian militants reacted to the siege by targeting Israel’s civilian population with deadly rocket strikes; the Israeli Army countered with air strikes, targeting militants but often claiming the lives of innocent residents
In 2007 it emerged that a small group of young men were surfing in Gaza, sharing battered surfboards they had attained prior to the siege Word traveled north to Israel, and that same year, a mixed group of Israelis and Americans delivered a dozen boards to their Palestinian counterparts
In the spring of 2008, they would attempt to deliver another 23 surfboards into Gaza By this time the situation in Gaza had deteriorated further, the border still sealed, with military activity a near daily occurrence
“God Went Surfing With the Devil” charts the difficulties and dangers encountered by surfers in the region Along the way it speaks to Israelis, Arab-Israelis, and Palestinians affected by the violence, charting their daily struggle to supersede the conflict through the joys of surfing

Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello party, surf, and sing in the epitome of 1960s teen sex comedies Besides dealing with the ups and downs of a summer romance, the two teens and their friends encounter a slew of wacky characters—including a nosy anthropologist (Cummings) studying the sexual habits of teenagers and the leader of a biker gang that has his eye on Funicello Dick Dale and the Del Tones provide the swingin’ hits for this teen surf musical!

Featurning Tsunami of Sound, The Derangers, and Matt Heaton LIVE plus USA Premiere of Acclaimed Australian Surf Documentary “Immersion”
7:00: Matt Heaton Live

7:45: Tsunami of Sound Live

8:30: East Coast Film Premiere: “Immersion” (Australia) 108 min

10:30: Derangers Live
About “Immersion” Over the past seven years, surfing enthusiast and filmmaker Tim Bonython has spent every available moment doing what he loves – conducting interviews and filming images of breath-taking wave riding from all corners of the globe to create a 13-part series on his beloved sport of surfing This series has now been re-created into a two-part live theatrical show called IMMERSION IMMERSION looks at every aspect of surfing – from its early history, the evolution of surfboards, the science of surfing, the grown of the sport and development of competition, to how surfing is portrayed in the media, the action and still cameramen, film editors to the business of surfing and the counter culture that has grown worldwide Immersion takes you to some of the world’s most isolated, notorious and picturesque surfing locations

IMMERSION is not just big waves and boards as the film covers all aspects of the sport – from body surfing and body boarding, surf ski, long board and even the new stand up paddle boarding About Matt Heaton Matt Heaton will play unaccompanied surf guitar instrumentals, drawing inspiration from classic axe slingers like Dick Dale and Link Wray as well as spy, science fiction and spaghetti western movies, often in the same tunes Matt Heaton & the Electric Heaters Site About Tsunami of Sound TSUNAMI OF SOUND plays Huge surf-inspired instrumentals that will make your head shake and your feet move The music we create is inspired by the Ventures, Los Straitjackets, Link Wray, the Fathoms, Laika and the Cosmonauts and all instrumental music Tsunami of Sound Site About The Derangers DON’T FEAR THE REVERB!

One hot Saturday afternoon in 1988, blues guitarist Drew Townson, then freshly relocated from Dallas to Boston, was laying on the couch nursing a hangover He was watching an old cowboy movie called “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” The music in the Italian Western caught Drew’s attention, big time He jumped off the couch, grabbed his Stratocaster, and began playing in a whole new way That moment changed Drew’s musical direction forever By 1989 he had started a band called the Derangers (pronounced “De-Rangers”), dedicated to playing spooky instrumental themes, encompassing Spaghetti Western, Surf, Spy-Jazz and more The first original recording by The Derangers was a filmic western called “Rio Sangre,” which was internationally hailed as a standout track By the early 90’s film directors like David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino were also exploring this haunted, reverberant sound in their movies Drew had always been a fan of original Surf-guitar kings like Dick Dale and The Ventures, so it was only natural to combine all these influences in to the Derangers’ “WesterMental” sound With Drew’s Strat a-blazin’ the trio gigged, toured and recorded from 1990 to 2000, Now, after a decade of dormancy, those bad bandidos are BACK!

50th Anniversary!
FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (1963) dir Terence Young w/Sean Connery, Daniela Bianchi, Pedro Armendariz, Lotte Lenya, Robert Shaw, Bernard Lee, Lois Maxwell 115 min

Dr No might have been the screen debut for James Bond, but it wasn’t until his second time that he really hit his stride FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE is, arguably, the best of the Bond films having overcome some of the first film’s clunkiness and not yet established the post-Goldfinger formulaic-ness In RUSSIA, Bond is drawn into an assassination plot that is actually a setup by the evil superspy organization SPECTRE and finds himself paired with a naïve but beautiful KGB agent

Silent Wagner (1912)

The film, directed by Carl Fröhlich and written by William Wauer, is about the life of Richard Wagner and was released in Europe in the spring of 1913 Originally intended to have an all-Wagner musical accompaniment, the film’s score is written by Italian composer Giuseppe Becce because Wagner’s heirs reportedly requested a large sum for the use of Wagner’s music Due to Becce’s uncanny resemblance to Wagner, he was also engaged to play the title role!

Exclusive Area Premiere June 14–16!
You’ve just arrived home after a bad day You’re broke and lonely, even though you live in the biggest and busiest city in America You do, however, have one cause for mild optimism: you seem to have captured the attention of an intriguing young lady You’ve rushed home to clean your apartment before she comes over In your haste, you see that you’ve missed a call There’s a voice mail; she tells you that she won’t be seeing you tonight With arresting insight, vulnerability, and a delightful sense of humor, Terence Nance’s explosively creative debut feature, AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY, documents the relationship between Terence and a lovely young woman (Minter) as it teeters on the divide between platonic and romantic Utilizing a tapestry of live action and various styles of animation, Nance explores the fantasies, emotions, and memories that race through his mind during a singular moment in time

(2012) dir Terence Nance w/Nance, Namik Minter 93 min Digital Presentation
“A dense, organic, dazzling and funny tapestry … Nance turns his thought into a performance of vulnerability that’s all too relatable in its indulgences It has heart without becoming cloying … A definitive mixtape that memorializes, and not so sneakily celebrates, the sweet angst of a certain kind of romantic limbo” – The New York Times

Called the greatest rock film ever made, this landmark documentary follows the Rolling Stones on their notorious 1969 US tour
In retrospect, having three hundred thousand Love Children descend on San Francisco's Altamont Speedway for a free concert by the Rolling Stones was probably not the best idea Combine that with security being handled by none other than the local chapter of the Hells Angels, and you have the setting of one of the most ill thought out decisions in entertainment history In the span it took for the Rolling Stones to sing "Sympathy for the Devil", the youth of an entire generation lost its innocence
With the cameras of Direct Cinema pioneers David and Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin having been given unprecedented all-access to the Stones, we not only have the immortalized moments on film of the clash between two opposing members of these outsider groups, but also the haunted words of Mick Jagger that ultimately shattered the illusion of Rock and Roll as the greatest ride of all time

New DCP Restoration! Area Premiere June 21–23!

Among the most influential films of the postwar era, Roberto Rossellini’s JOURNEY TO ITALY charts the declining marriage of a British couple (Bergman and Sanders) on a trip in the countryside near Naples More than just an anatomy of a relationship, Rossellini’s masterpiece is a heartrending work of emotional transcendence and profound spirituality Hailed as a groundbreaking work of modernism by the critics of Cahiers du Cinéma and named by Martin Scorsese as one of his favorite films, JOURNEY TO ITALY is a breathtaking cinematic landmark We’re thrilled to launch our first major slate of repertory programming on our new DCP projection system with this long-unavailable international classic A favorite of Brattle audiences in years past (it was a flagship film in frequent Italian cinema series), JOURNEY TO ITALY gradually fell victim to poorly maintained prints until it was simply no longer available for regular screenings This will be the first time we have featured it in almost 15 years, and it screens in a gorgeous new restoration of the essential English-language version of the film by Janus Films (1954) dir Roberto Rossellini w/Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders 97 min Digital Presentation

The Coolidge is proud to present the new digital restoration of one of the most sweeping epics in film history

Based on the life and exploits of TE Lawrence (played immaculately by newcomer Peter O'Toole) during World War I, Lawrence of Arabia is ultimately a meditation on the meaning of war and freedom Lawrence, a misfit British Army lieutenant, is sent to assist Arab Prince Faisal (Alec Guinness) in his revolt against the Turks As he develops a kinship with Price Faisal and the plight of the Arab National Council, he soon becomes a military leader for the guerrilla attacks against Turkish targets and a beloved iconoclast

Helen Mirren reprises her Academy Award winning role as Queen Elizabeth II in the highly-anticipated West End production of The Audience, broadcast live from London’s Gielgud Theatre as part of National Theatre Live For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace – a meeting like no other in British public life – it is private Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said Not even to their spouses The Audience breaks this contract of silence – and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive

Julie Andrews plays Maria, a postulant in Nonnberg Abbey who isn't quite suited to being a nun Her fate changes when widowed Austrian Navy Captain Georg von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) requests a governess to be sent to care for his seven mischievous children A naval officer before a father, von Trapp has his house running more like a ship than a home: whistle blows announcing meetings, his children dressed in sailor-suits, ordering everyone around It initially seems that Maria has given up one set of strict rules for another, but the more times she spends with the von Trapp children - and they with her - the more she is able to bring them together as a fun, fancy-free family At first to the chagrin of Captain von Trapp, but soon he, too, begins to see the value of the sound of music

By 1968 Stanley Kubrick had already tackled a slew of powerful topics including three anti-war films (Fear and Desire, Paths of Glory, Dr Strangelove), a perfect noir thriller (The Killing), one of the most notorious and "unfilmable" novels of the 20th century (Lolita), and a Hollywood epic (Spartacus) Where else but the unknown was he to venture?

Adapting Arther C Clarke's science fiction short story "The Sentinel", Kubrick expanded the scope of the work from a brief inquiry into the existence of life in the universe to a meditation about the development and advancement of intelligence Beginning with the moment when apes begin cognitive thought and jumping to early lunar exploration, continuing with a manned journey to Jupiter and the development and understanding of non-linear time, 2001: A Space Odyssey tackles some of the most essential topics of humanity and nature

With unparalleled special effects, 2001 is a film that needs to be seen on the big screen in all its glory

In under three minutes Martin Scorsese revolutionized cinema The opening credits of Mean Streets has perhaps had more of a lasting effect on the use of music and narrative in popular film than any other three minutes in the history of the medium Arising out of a New York film scene steeped in outré concepts, Scorsese was able to sculpt these elements into a cannon shot that would last for generations
The story is a simple one: Charlie (Harvey Keitel) is a debt collector for his uncle in the Italian mafia He feels responsible for his best friend Johnny Boy (Robert De Niro), who is stuck in neutral, owing money to loan sharks all over town Having to choose between a childhood allegiance and his family is an impossible decision, but ultimately there's not much that he can do to save Johnny Boy

Award-winning playwright and author Tony Kushner is front and center this year with his Academy Award nomination for best screenplay with the hugely praised Lincoln No stranger to awards, however, the native New Yorker, who spent his formative years in Louisiana, has wowed America for years with hardhitting, politically charged theater and well-reviewed movies
In the early 1990s, his epic, seven-hour, two-part Broadway blockbuster, Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, earned him a Pulitzer Prize, two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, the Evening Standard Award, two Olivier Award Nominations, the New York Critics Circle Award, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, and the LAMBDA Liberty Award for Drama That, however, was only the beginning
In addition to his stage work, Tony Kushner wrote the screenplays for Steven Spielberg?s movie Munich, and for Mike Nichols film Angels in America; has translated and adapted the work of others, including Bertolt Brecht's The Good Person of Sezuan and Mother Courage and Her Children and collaborated with the late Maurice Sendak, noted children's author and illustrator
Tony Kushner graduated from Columbia University with a bachelor?s degree in medieval studies and continued his graduate education in acting at New York University?s Tisch School of the Arts He holds honorary doctorates from Purchase College, State University of New York; City University of New York?s John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Brandeis University

The giant screen – 65’ high by 85’ wide – is taller than a six story building! The slight curvature of the screen extends to the edge of your peripheral vision The lamps that project the crystal clear images onto the gigantic screen get as bright and as hot as the surface of the sun! So hot, in fact, that cold water must be pumped into the lamp connectors to keep the machine from melting
Amazing IMAX films will take you where you've only dreamed of going! Join us for incredible journeys to the bottom of the sea, outer space, and almost anywhere in between Through the magic of IMAX and IMAX 3D, you can visit animals and habitats that are too large, too small or too endangered to exhibit in an Aquarium setting
You can see an IMAX movie on its own, on a combo ticket when you visit the Aquarium or as part of an IMAX Theatre birthday party package with a participating local restaurant
