Cape Ann Artisans 2013 Spring Studio Tour

Cape Ann is home to a thriving arts community, one of the oldest in the country For thirty years Cape Ann Artisans has been inviting the public to visit their studios during their Open studio weekends This year’s spring tour will be held June 22nd and 23rd from 10 am to 5 pm each day The self-guided tour along the scenic coastline of Gloucester and Rockport presents a unique opportunity to meet 26 professional artists and see their work in the setting in which it was created The work represented includes: pottery, painting, sculpture, photography, mosaics, jewelry, hand-made glass beads, and weaving, and block printing Several of the artists will be demonstrating their working process during the tours

The members of Cape Ann Artisans, while diverse in our art and expression, share a common sense of place on Cape Ann Whether we were born and raised in the area, left and returned from other places, or found Cape Ann later in life, we draw our aesthetics and our inspiration directly from the color, light, and vistas of our environment??Brochures with route maps will be available at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, the Rockport Information Booth on Rte 127 and at each of the artisans A bright magenta Studio Tour banner will mark each location

Double-and-Add plays on a mathematical term used in binary coding, referencing a computational function found in electronic and digital processing
The three featured artists—Angela Bulloch, Haroon Mirza, and Anthony McCall—use time-based media (programmed light, sound, and slide projection) to investigate the sensory transmission of information through seemingly immaterial systems such as algorithms, electricity, and RGB-light
Recent acquisitions by Bulloch (Copper 2, 2011) and Mirza (Panasonic2, 2011) are on view for the first time at the Museum alongside a historical slide projector piece by Anthony McCall (Miniature in Black and White, 1972)

LAUGHING STOCK – August 7 – 18

A backstage farce by Charles Morey

A hilarious comedy and genuinely affectionate look into the world of the theatre When The Playhouse, a rustic New England summer theatre (any resemblance to the Peterborough Players is purely coincidental, of course), schedules a repertory season of Dracula, Hamlet and Charley's Aunt, comic mayhem ensues We follow the well-intentioned but over-matched company from outrageous auditions, to ego-driven rehearsals, through opening nights gone disastrously awry, to the elation of a great play well told and the comic and nostalgic season close Chuck Morey, former Artistic Director of the Peterborough Players, (who directed last season’s The 39 Steps) returns to direct this big hit from the 2004 season

  BOX OFFICE: (603) 924-7585 Hours: 10 am – 4 pm Monday-Friday

Curtain times: 7PM Tues, 8PM Wed–Sat, and 4PM Sundays

Mount Auburn’s historic landscape has seen many changes since it was first developed 181 years ago Bodies of water have been filled in, iconic monuments have been removed, natural disasters have wreaked havoc, and buildings have been demolished to make way for the new Though much of the physical evidence of this history has been lost to time, if you know where to look, you’ll find that the landscape has actually preserved much of this “lost” history for us! Come explore Mount Auburn’s past with Mount Auburn’s Cemetery Development & Preservation Associate Katie Robinson as she guides you, aided by historical documents and clues in the landscape, in a search for what once was

“Early Spring: Henry Thoreau and Climate Change,” a ground-breaking exhibition at the Concord Museum from April 12 through September 15, 2013, explores three centuries of careful observation of seasonal natural phenomena in Concord, a pool of data on the relationship between climate and biology that is essentially without parallel in North America The exhibition also provides an extraordinary opportunity to examine the Concord Museum’s renowned Thoreau collection that includes the desk on which Thoreau wrote Walden, together with examples of his original field notes, journal recordings, seasonal charts, and botanical specimens This material has never before been exhibited together
Henry Thoreau (1817-1862) is one of the most read, beloved, and influential of American authors He thought and wrote expansively about the natural world in a way that has, since his time, come to be called ecological For the last ten years of his life, he devoted a portion of every day to a large-scale project to gather and analyze data on the changing phenomena of the seasons He measured snow depth, watched for the day when the ice melted off Walden Pond, noted the arrival of songbirds in the spring, and above all, recorded the first flowering time for hundreds of plant species in Concord “I often visited a particular plant four or five miles distant, half a dozen times within a fortnight, that I might know exactly when it opened,” Thoreau wrote in his journal
The exhibition draws upon the Concord Museum’s unparalleled Thoreau collection of 250 objects, preserved by the Museum for more than a century The collection includes the humble green desk at which Henry Thoreau wrote, his Walden bedstead, his snowshoes, spyglass, walking stick notched for measuring snow, and his copy of Wilson’s American Ornithology These icons of American literary and natural history will be exhibited together with rare historical material —Thoreau’s seasonal charts, field notes, and journal — on loan from The Morgan Library and Museum Additionally on view will be examples of Thoreau’s own herbarium specimens from the Harvard University Herbaria, and Thoreau’s flute book used for pressing plants, on loan from the Louisa May Alcott Memorial Association
Thoreau’s choice of Concord as a subject was emulated by a continuum of naturalists, some amateur and some professional, in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries The observations of these citizen scientists — carefully recorded over many years — now form an invaluable resource for scientists interested in the topic of climate change Dr Richard Primack, Professor of Biology at Boston University and Guest Scholar for the exhibition, has successfully used the data collected by Thoreau and later Concordians as comparatives to sets of data that he and his graduate students have been actively collecting in Concord since 2008
On view from April 12 through September 15, 2013, “Early Spring: Henry Thoreau and Climate Change” will be accompanied by a number of associated programs for families, students, teachers, and all those interested in the environmental challenges facing citizens today On April 25, the opening speaker for the exhibition is Bill McKibben, environmental activist, author, and journalist

On April 13th, Heritage Museums & Gardens opens for the season with its 2013 Special Exhibit - “Driving Our Dreams: Imagination in Motion” - which will pay homage to the great car concepts and designers who pushed the boundaries of automobile design and technology It will feature sixteen of the most exceptional and historically-significant concept cars from across the nation This is the first time this collection of unique cars, which hail from the country’s top automobile museums and private collections, has been displayed together “Driving Our Dreams” will emphasize the design process behind great concepts of the past, like the Firebird II, and the cars of tomorrow, like the Terrafugia flying car This is an interactive exhibition for all ages and all demographics, and will provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the glamorous and innovative world of automotive design Many of the featured concept cars were showcased at GM’s Motorama extravaganzas during the 1950s Unlike prototypes, concept or “dream cars” were meant to test the limits of technology and design, and to build excitement among consumers Most never made it to production, largely because they would have been too expensive to mass-produce From the 1956 Firebird II to the Infinium solar-powered car, these cars exemplify the far-reaching boundaries of automobile designers’ imaginations Car enthusiasts will especially delight in the 1963 personal Corvette of GM’s Harley Earl, who is regarded as one of the pioneers in automobile design and the father of the Corvette The exhibit will also spotlight fashion with a look at how car design has reflected on pop culture and fashion over the decades Giant images featuring such icons as Sophia Loren, Mick Jagger, and Steve McQueen will add to the exhibit Designer tools and interactive stations where visitors can create design mood boards and style and post solar car drawings will also engage visitors in the design process In addition to the cars displayed in the Automobile Gallery, the exhibit will extend into Heritage’s Special Exhibitions Gallery, where it will explore what today’s designers are dreaming up for future automotive designs via a multi-media experience The special Arbella Insurance Foundation Family Discovery Room will encourage children and adults to design their own concept cars, build miniature vehicles using an assortment of wooden parts, and test them for speed on a giant ramp Plus, the gallery walls will be covered with blackboard paint, encouraging visitors to share their thoughts and ideas related to automobiles and transportation Also in the Special Exhibitions Gallery will be a massive model of a megacity, “Paper Metropolis,” created by international artist and thought leader Kiel Johnson Johnson has been conducting workshops around the world, leading community builds of his intricate cardboard city creations, and getting multi-generations to think about the future of city planning He will lead a five-day community build with students, artists, members, community organizations and visitors at Heritage and the resulting art piece will remain part of the exhibit “This is one of the most remarkable exhibitions we’ve had the pleasure of showcasing,” said Ellen Spear, President & CEO of Heritage Museums & Gardens “The intersection of fashion, design, style and technology is reflected in these rare and inspiring concepts- many of the ideas of 50 years ago are just being incorporated into cars today”
