Brookline Music School (BMS) ensembles and young emerging artists from Brookline will perform a variety of classic songs and original music at A Music Festival for Brookline, BROOKstock II: Where the ‘60’s Meet 2013 concert on Saturday, June 1st at 7:30pm in the Ellsworth Theatre at Pine Manor College
Brookline Music School’s Rock/Jazz ensembles will perform music from the 1960’s, an amazing decade of American popular music, which laid the foundation for all that followed Original music from Brookline's most promising young bands, singer/songwriters, and composers, such as Big Words, Next Best Western, Fluffington, and Bella Ortiz-Ren will also be featured BROOKstock II seeks to contrast music from the 1960’s with music being created here and now by today's young musicians The similarities and differences between the two will certainly shape an exciting and entertaining evening of live music
The BMS Rock/Jazz ensembles are lead by Brookline Music School’s Ensembles Coordinator and saxophone faculty John Purcell, who has been teaching ensembles at BMS sine 1996 Purcell said he has lead “100’s of ensembles and worked with 100’s and 100’s of students” The ensembles mainly play popular rock or jazz songs, while incorporating original music from students Purcell arranges all the songs and explained that he will “choose material or arrange in such a way that plays on the strengths of each individual The BMS ensembles frequently perform live, including at the BMS Rocks Roggie’s event at Roggie’s Brew & Grille in Brighton, for two full days, twice a year, Beatles Open Sing concerts at Lincoln School, and the annual spring concerts, including three Beatles concerts, Songs in the Key of Wonder, and the first BROOKstock, which have taken place in the spacious Ellsworth Theatre at Pine Manor College for the past few years

Louisiana’s #1 roots music export and Grammy nominee Tab Benoit has assembled a stellar ensemble of fellow New Orleans musicians, including NO Legends, The Meters and Neville Brothers, Cyril Neville, fiddler Waylon Thibodeaux, influential New Orleans drummer Johnny Vidacovich, harmonica/accordion player Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone, and New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, to forge a musical plea for the fragile eco-system that is the increasingly depleted wetlands surrounding their hometown The band’s music sounds like Louisiana Rock, Funk, Soul, and Cajun classics that have risen from years of music history and the environment that the music comes from
The Voice of the Wetlands Organization formed the first national out-reach program to educate and make the public aware that Louisiana was in danger; the refineries that line the coast of Louisiana were unprotected due to years of neglect by locals and oil companies The Voice of the Wetlands All-stars has appeared at both the Democratic and Republican Conventions and appears annually at the Voice of the Wetlands Festival in Houma, Louisiana If there is one group that encapsulates the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, it is the Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars, an improbable cooperative with a cause

Born in Lubbock , TX, McClinton first appeared on a hit record in 1962, when his distinctive harmonica playing graced Bruce Channel’s No 1 single “Hey Baby” Beginning in 1975, McClinton recorded a series of LPs for ABC, Capricorn, & Capitol that melded blues, R&B, and country into a soulful blend At Capitol in 1980, McClinton scored the top 10 hit “Giving It Up For Your Love,” which pushed the album The Jealous Kind into the top 40 After spending the ‘80s and ‘90s cutting consistently powerful albums, McClinton arrived at New West Records in 2001 with the wildly received Nothing Personal, which won him his first solo Grammy, for best contemporary blues album Room to Breathe followed in 2002 “I’m an acquired taste in that my kind of music’s not for little kids,” the Texan singer-songwriter says “It’s adult rock ‘n’ roll…There are a lot of beautiful colors and sad stories and much-deserved joy in that” All those colors and stories are richly present in McClinton’s album “Acquired Taste” The collection is the musician’s fourth studio set for the label, and it succeeds his Grammy Award-winning Cost of Living (2005), which was named best contemporary blues recording by the Recording Academy

Miss Tess is a New York City based songwriter and performing musician, who tours regularly with her band, as "Miss Tess & The Bon Ton Parade" In addition to Tess's tasty licks and prowess on her 1940s archtop guitar, the current lineup includes Will Graefe on guitar, Danny Weller on upright bass, and Matt Meyer on drums Inspired by styles of vintage swing, blues, country, and folk, Miss Tess draws comparisons to artists such as Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Peggy Lee, and Chuck Berry, but maintains a style all of her own "She’s a musical chameleon, recalling at various moments Tom Waits’ barfly humor, the cabaret-rock of Beirut, or even the wink-wink wit of early Bette Midler" – Holly Hughes, Blog Critics

Zero Point Theater’s new staging of Merchant of Venice, while essentially true to Shakespeare’s text, is set against the background of a Jazz/Blues World during Prohibition, in a Venice very like (but not) New Orleans

Antonio, our Merchant of “Venus” (one of Shakespeare’s many puns), is a rumrunner whose understanding of love is sadly warped by his mercantile nature He so monetizes love that he risks his very life borrowing from Shylock to provide money to Bassanio, who he achingly loves but, under the strictures of society, he can never have He even gives the money to Bassanio to woo a woman

Portia, whose own father did not see her as capable to choose her own mate, is one of the most brilliant people around She cares little about her wealth, her beauty and her sexiness except as tools She so desperately wants to be respected for her mind, in a world in which only men can be, that she risks exposure and ridicule by disguising herself as a man to argue law in the bright spotlight of the Venetian Court

Shylock is a black woman who owns a Speakeasy Jazz Club, and a devout Jew She struggles under both the disrespect of her white Christian competitors, and the pain of the hard choices, unfair deprivations, and compromises in her values she made to get where she is In her desire to ensure her daughter Jessica a better life than she herself had, Shylock so represses and keeps Jessica cloistered at home that Jessica elopes with a Christian, and a lot of Shylock’s money Shylock’s dogged insistence on a literal enforcement of Antonio’s bond in order to gain the respect of the law backfires, and leads to the loss of all she holds dear

Zero Point’s production of Merchant will challenge the audience to recognize and re-think its own perspectives on gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and the us versus them struggles which either bind us together in a sense of security, or expose us to biting and lonely pain, and at worst threaten our sense of personal identity and value

In the early fall of 1973 The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage Their debut album had already spawned numerous hits The band’s recent release of their Greatest Hits album, in traditional vinyl form, is a time capsule from that period “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed More than four decades later, the new vinyl Greatest Hits release takes us back to the early years of The Marshall Tucker Band, both literally and physically

Still led today by founding member and lead singer Doug Gray, they represent a time and place in music that will never be duplicated Gray is quick to credit the band's current dynamic members with carrying on the timeless essence of the Marshall Tucker Band sound Current members include the highly respected drummer BB Borden, a former member of both Mother's Finest and The Outlaws, multi instrumentalist Marcus Henderson of Macon, Georgia, plays flute, saxophone and keyboards in addition to lead and background vocals, Pat Elwood on bass guitar, and Rick Willis on lead guitar and vocals, both of Spartanburg SC, are disciples of the Caldwell Brothers Acclaimed lead guitarist and vocalist Chris Hicks recently rejoined the band after a two-year absence Together they present a powerful stage presence as they continue to tour the country and continue to be powerful force in the world of music

The Marshall Tucker Band got its start in Spartanburg, SC when Gray teamed up with Tommy Caldwell and Toy Caldwell, Paul T Riddle, George McCorkle and Jerry Eubanks, borrowing the name "Marshall Tucker" from a piano tuner whose name was found on a key ring in their old rehearsal space In 1972, they signed with Capricorn Records, the same label that guided The Allman Brothers Band, Wet Willie, and others to national fame The MTB opened shows for The Allman Brothers in 1973, and the following year, they began to headline their own shows across America due to the platinum-plus sales of their debut album They toured constantly playing sheds, stadiums, theaters, fairs, and festivals

In years to come, The Marshall Tucker Band would wow critics and influence major country acts like Alabama, The Kentucky Headhunters, Confederate Railroad, and Travis Tritt with its definitive blend of rock, rhythm & blues, jazz, country, and gospel Now, thanks to the expanding scope of today's music, a new generation of fans is learning what the rest of their fans have known for so long- that good music knows no boundaries Along the way, the band has recorded twenty two studio albums, three DVDs, three live albums and many compilations

“What a joyful noise they made, as soloists and en masse … their ecstatic reading of the Mass elevated Marsalis’s riffs to the high heavens” —The Guardian (UK)
