Light refreshments will be provided
Ifé Franklin’s Indigo Project is a multi-dimensional, installation, exhibition and performance piece The Artist says:
This piece will be a living testament honoring Africans and African Americans who lived and died as enslaved people in The American South producing materials that I work with closely/freely: Cotton and Indigo Indigo fabric will be created and used to wrap a replica of a slave cabin
More importantly, Ifé wants to explore the “shared” history of enslavement that remains a minefield of suffering as well as love She believes a collective healing needs to take place to bring forth some relief of the pain, suffering and injustice that still stands today and continues to separate and haunt us Ifé Franklin’s Indigo Project is a platform for change, collective community conversation, history, art making, and transformation This is the second in a series of UFORGE Gallery exhibitions this year showcasing faculty from the Eliot School of Fine & Applied Arts

Synergia: A Moveable Exhibit of Local History, Poetry and Visual Art beginning at Hudson’s Historic Town Hall Hudson, Bolton, Harvard, Marlborough, Shrewsbury and Sudbury and Surrounding Communities - June 7 The River’s Edge Arts Alliance is very excited to present Synergia, an engaging new moveable exhibit of local history, poetry and visual art that will move from town to town in order to be enjoyed by multiple communities Hudson, Bolton, Harvard, Marlborough, Shrewsbury and Sudbury as well as surrounding community residents are welcome to attend In our towns we have historical societies, councils and museums which house various educational pieces of our communities past We also have talented artists and writers who crave the opportunity to create pieces of work worthy of public viewing We have townspeople interested in finding out where we come from and how we got to where we are Through Synergia, we have brought these elements together to increase the awareness of our community history through the lens of the literary and visual arts By introducing pen to paintbrush, we are more aptly able to tell our story in a visual and oral fashion, much like our forefathers did so many years ago The overall encounter with this project has been multi- dimensional in nature, breathing life into our local heritage and engaging our community in a more sense-driven experience How it worked: Representatives from participating local historical societies or councils in the immediate area gave brief lectures about one historical element in their town such as a building, family, business, landmark, item, figure or event which they felt best represented the towns’ history Literary artists were asked to respond to the historical element by writing a poem of 40 lines or less and visual artists were asked to create an artistic piece utilizing oils, acrylics, pastels, pen and ink or watercolors which could be displayed on an easel responding to one particular historical element which struck their interest The pieces were sent to the River’s Edge Arts Alliance and brought to the next meeting, where poems and visual arts pieces were swapped between literary and visual artists The artists then took the swapped piece assigned to them and created a second corresponding poem or visual art piece for this unique moveable exhibit which begins on June 10th and runs through July 1st at Hudson’s Town Hall Bolton Public Library will be housing the exhibit in the month of August A full calendar will be available at the first reception on Friday, June 7th from 7 – 9:30 You may view past meeting videos on our website upwithartsorg/synergia Are you curious? Please join us for this unique evening of community, history, poetry, art, food and music For additional information call the River’s Edge Arts Alliance at 978-562-1646 or visit upwithartsorg/synergia

In the days before photography, portraits offered self-expression and family documentation, first to the wealthy colonial settlers, and then increasingly to the middle class Itinerant artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, often self-taught, painted inexpensive portraits for rural families, and worked in a style whose charm still appeals today Join Site Manager Kristen Weiss for an in-depth look at the folk art portrait collection at Cogswell's Grant, and an exploration of the many families and artists represented in the house

JL Bell will discuss the provenance, history, and people connected with one of the fascinating items featured in our current exhibition, The Object of History: Ephraim Moors's powder horn
Carvings on the horn include a crude drawing of the Continental Army encampment on Winter Hill, five grenadiers, a mansion house, and the head of a beast Aside from what the carving itself says and the name of the sea captain who donated it to the Massachusetts Historical Society, almost nothing else is known about this object

On April 13th, Heritage Museums & Gardens opens for the season with its 2013 Special Exhibit - “Driving Our Dreams: Imagination in Motion” - which will pay homage to the great car concepts and designers who pushed the boundaries of automobile design and technology It will feature sixteen of the most exceptional and historically-significant concept cars from across the nation This is the first time this collection of unique cars, which hail from the country’s top automobile museums and private collections, has been displayed together “Driving Our Dreams” will emphasize the design process behind great concepts of the past, like the Firebird II, and the cars of tomorrow, like the Terrafugia flying car This is an interactive exhibition for all ages and all demographics, and will provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the glamorous and innovative world of automotive design Many of the featured concept cars were showcased at GM’s Motorama extravaganzas during the 1950s Unlike prototypes, concept or “dream cars” were meant to test the limits of technology and design, and to build excitement among consumers Most never made it to production, largely because they would have been too expensive to mass-produce From the 1956 Firebird II to the Infinium solar-powered car, these cars exemplify the far-reaching boundaries of automobile designers’ imaginations Car enthusiasts will especially delight in the 1963 personal Corvette of GM’s Harley Earl, who is regarded as one of the pioneers in automobile design and the father of the Corvette The exhibit will also spotlight fashion with a look at how car design has reflected on pop culture and fashion over the decades Giant images featuring such icons as Sophia Loren, Mick Jagger, and Steve McQueen will add to the exhibit Designer tools and interactive stations where visitors can create design mood boards and style and post solar car drawings will also engage visitors in the design process In addition to the cars displayed in the Automobile Gallery, the exhibit will extend into Heritage’s Special Exhibitions Gallery, where it will explore what today’s designers are dreaming up for future automotive designs via a multi-media experience The special Arbella Insurance Foundation Family Discovery Room will encourage children and adults to design their own concept cars, build miniature vehicles using an assortment of wooden parts, and test them for speed on a giant ramp Plus, the gallery walls will be covered with blackboard paint, encouraging visitors to share their thoughts and ideas related to automobiles and transportation Also in the Special Exhibitions Gallery will be a massive model of a megacity, “Paper Metropolis,” created by international artist and thought leader Kiel Johnson Johnson has been conducting workshops around the world, leading community builds of his intricate cardboard city creations, and getting multi-generations to think about the future of city planning He will lead a five-day community build with students, artists, members, community organizations and visitors at Heritage and the resulting art piece will remain part of the exhibit “This is one of the most remarkable exhibitions we’ve had the pleasure of showcasing,” said Ellen Spear, President & CEO of Heritage Museums & Gardens “The intersection of fashion, design, style and technology is reflected in these rare and inspiring concepts- many of the ideas of 50 years ago are just being incorporated into cars today” To complement the exhibit, several prominent leaders in the auto industry will visit Heritage to participate in a lecture series throughout the exhibit Lecturers include documentary producer Bill Stephens; TV personality and auto expert Wayne Carini; noted restoration expert Kevin MacKay; Dr Carl Dietrich, aerospace engineer and CEO/CTO and co-founder of Terrafugia; Bill Porter, former General Motors designer and authority on twentieth century automobile design trends; and Dr Michael Knodler, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst A complete schedule can be viewed at wwwheritagemuseumsandgardensorg “Driving Our Dreams” Imagination in Motion” opens on April 13 and closes on October 27, 2013 It’s included with admission This exhibit is sponsored by Arbella Insurance Foundation, Bonhams International Auctioneers, Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines and Reliable Carriers Automobiles to be featured in Exhibit include: • 1927 LaSalle • 1953 Buick Wildcat II • 1953 Lincoln X100 • 1954 Hudson Italia • 1954 Plymouth Explorer • 1956 Firebird II •
