Step into the Chandler Gallery, and you will see the future Not only is “The Future” the theme of the current show, but the exhibition is curated entirely by elementary school students from Agassiz Baldwin Community’s afterschool program—children who represent the world’s future artists, curators and gallery-owners This project-based learning activity is a unique opportunity for children to experience the gallery process “Children know that they can take their artwork home and show it to their parents,” says Early Education Site Director Kim Baldasaro “But they learn that they could also share their artwork with other people in a gallery” Children plan the exhibition from start to finish: they choose a theme, they work in teams to collaborate on 2D and 3D pieces, and they install the show in the gallery Agassiz Baldwin Afterschool also invites students from other afterschool programs to create artwork for the exhibition Baldasaro’s favorite part of the process is watching the projects evolve as the children brainstorm one idea, begin to develop it, and then change their minds and take the artwork in a new direction During the two-month assignment, students also gain experience executing a long-term project They learn how to plan ahead, gather supplies, and work together to accomplish a task In the end, they take great pride in their work and the work of their collaborators Baldasaro loves to see “how happy kids are when they bring their parents to the show They point to their project and say ‘That’s mine!’” “The Kid-Curated Art Show: The Future” is at the Chandler Gallery at 20 Sacramento Street in Cambridge from May 30-June 28 The opening reception will be held at 5:45 pm on June 12 Agassiz Baldwin Community is a private, non-profit organization with a forty-year history of quality programs and services in the Cambridge community]]>

On April 13th, Heritage Museums & Gardens opens for the season with its 2013 Special Exhibit - “Driving Our Dreams: Imagination in Motion” - which will pay homage to the great car concepts and designers who pushed the boundaries of automobile design and technology It will feature sixteen of the most exceptional and historically-significant concept cars from across the nation This is the first time this collection of unique cars, which hail from the country’s top automobile museums and private collections, has been displayed together “Driving Our Dreams” will emphasize the design process behind great concepts of the past, like the Firebird II, and the cars of tomorrow, like the Terrafugia flying car This is an interactive exhibition for all ages and all demographics, and will provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the glamorous and innovative world of automotive design Many of the featured concept cars were showcased at GM’s Motorama extravaganzas during the 1950s Unlike prototypes, concept or “dream cars” were meant to test the limits of technology and design, and to build excitement among consumers Most never made it to production, largely because they would have been too expensive to mass-produce From the 1956 Firebird II to the Infinium solar-powered car, these cars exemplify the far-reaching boundaries of automobile designers’ imaginations Car enthusiasts will especially delight in the 1963 personal Corvette of GM’s Harley Earl, who is regarded as one of the pioneers in automobile design and the father of the Corvette The exhibit will also spotlight fashion with a look at how car design has reflected on pop culture and fashion over the decades Giant images featuring such icons as Sophia Loren, Mick Jagger, and Steve McQueen will add to the exhibit Designer tools and interactive stations where visitors can create design mood boards and style and post solar car drawings will also engage visitors in the design process In addition to the cars displayed in the Automobile Gallery, the exhibit will extend into Heritage’s Special Exhibitions Gallery, where it will explore what today’s designers are dreaming up for future automotive designs via a multi-media experience The special Arbella Insurance Foundation Family Discovery Room will encourage children and adults to design their own concept cars, build miniature vehicles using an assortment of wooden parts, and test them for speed on a giant ramp Plus, the gallery walls will be covered with blackboard paint, encouraging visitors to share their thoughts and ideas related to automobiles and transportation Also in the Special Exhibitions Gallery will be a massive model of a megacity, “Paper Metropolis,” created by international artist and thought leader Kiel Johnson Johnson has been conducting workshops around the world, leading community builds of his intricate cardboard city creations, and getting multi-generations to think about the future of city planning He will lead a five-day community build with students, artists, members, community organizations and visitors at Heritage and the resulting art piece will remain part of the exhibit “This is one of the most remarkable exhibitions we’ve had the pleasure of showcasing,” said Ellen Spear, President & CEO of Heritage Museums & Gardens “The intersection of fashion, design, style and technology is reflected in these rare and inspiring concepts- many of the ideas of 50 years ago are just being incorporated into cars today” To complement the exhibit, several prominent leaders in the auto industry will visit Heritage to participate in a lecture series throughout the exhibit Lecturers include documentary producer Bill Stephens; It was a close call—maybe the closest call in human history For two weeks in October 1962, the world teetered on the edge of thermonuclear war and the end of civilization as we know it Earlier that fall, the Soviet Union, under orders from Premier Nikita Khrushchev, began to secretly deploy a nuclear strike force in Cuba, just 90 miles from the United States, with missiles that could reach most major US cities in less than five minutes President John F Kennedy said the missiles would not be tolerated, and insisted on their removal Khrushchev refused The stand-off nearly caused a nuclear exchange and is remembered in this country as the Cuban Missile Crisis For 13 days, the fate of the world hung in the balance For all his muscular, anti-communist rhetoric, the President’s response was remarkably restrained Under unimaginable pressure—as the Soviets raced to complete construction of the missile sites—the President refused to be rushed He conducted the negotiations with discipline and delicacy, balancing cold resolve with pragmatic statesmanship He would not accept the missiles, but neither would he force the hand of an impulsive opponent into a rash response And on October 28, 1962, with the world’s mightiest military forces bristling with anticipation, and events spinning out of control, Khrushchev suddenly relented The missile sites, he announced, would be dismantled immediately The peaceful resolution of the crisis is considered to be one of President Kennedy’s greatest achievements “To the Brink” is a look back at the crisis from the 50-year mark, which is drawn mainly from US sources and presents a US viewpoint Pieces of the story that appear hazy now may come into sharper focus over time; others that are now clear will blur as the episode recedes further into history Unbeknownst to almost all the participants, JFK recorded those White House meetings Excerpts from the 43 hours of secret recordings relating to the Cuban Missile Crisis are presented in the gallery and form the centerpiece of this exhibit Original documents, artifacts, and photographs from the National Archives and the Kennedy Library complement the tapes in a dramatic presentation that draws the visitor into this milestone 20th-century event "To The Brink" will be on display at the Kennedy Library until December 1, 2013]]>
