Circus Smirkus is an award-winning, international, not-for-profit youth arts organization founded in 1987. It is dedicated to promoting the skills, culture and traditions of the traveling circus, to inspiring youth to engage in life-changing adventures in the circus arts, and to bringing communities together in healthy, joyous celebration. Circus Smirkus provides cultural and educational opportunities for children through three programs. The Smirkus Summer Camp is a traditional overnight camp focusing on circus arts. The School Residency Program brings circus artists into classrooms. The flagship program is the Big Top Tour, a traveling summer circus in which approximately 30 kids between the ages of 10 and 18 perform 70 shows in 15 cities and towns around the Northeast, including Massachusetts. The Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour is the only youth circus in the country that travels "under canvas," that is, with its own Big Top tent. Circus Smirkus has been featured in numerous publications including The Boston Globe, The New York Times, and The International Tribune. It has been broadcast on national television, including the Disney Channel, which aired a 15-part series on Circus Smirkus. It is the subject of the award-winning documentary, "Circus Dreams." Over the years, Circus Smirkus has welcomed coaches and performers from 32 countries, 26 states and 10 Native American Tribes.
