Organization

The Edinburg Center was established as a private non-profit corporation in January of 1977. First known as the Metropolitan Beaverbrook Mental Health and Retardation Center and later as the Center for Mental Health and Retardation Services, the agency began operations with a community Board of Directors, one staff person, a basement office at Metropolitan State Hospital, and a budget of less than five hundred thousand dollars. In 2002 the agency was renamed The Edinburg Center in honor of its founder, Golda Edinburg, MSW, who provided the strategic vision that guided the Center from its infancy into the thriving community mental health and developmental disability center it is today. With major sites in Waltham and Lexington, The Edinburg Center currently serves eighteen communities west of Boston. The Center provides a comprehensive continuum of care that includes residential supports, short term respite care, structured day treatment and rehabilitative programs, clubhouse services, community support services and outpatient counseling and medication services. The mission of The Edinburg Center is distinguished by our longstanding belief that all persons have the potential to learn, the capacity for change and the right to live a meaningful life in the community of his or her choice. Our mission is to provide an array of innovative services which promote personal growth and independence, foster hope and enhance the quality of life of people with mental health conditions, co-occurring substance use conditions and/or developmental disabilities.
