Since its founding in 1976 the New England Philharmonic has grown from a chamber orchestra to a full symphony orchestra with a unique mission to perform the orchestral works of today's composers along with standard and lesser-known compositions by the masters of the last 250 years. In the last four years alone, the NEP has presented over a dozen local, regional, and world premieres of works by composers from around the country and Europe. An orchestra composed of professional and non-professional musicians and students who donate their time and talent, the NEP has received recognition and support from the Argosy Foundation, the Getty Foundation, the Virgil Thomson Foundation, and the Aaron Copland Fund for New Music, and is a seven-time recipient of ASCAP's award for adventurous programming, most recently for 2005-2006 season. It is one of the only orchestras of its kind in the country with a Composer in Residence program, and it annually receives hundreds of scores from around the world in its unique Call for Scores competition. Past seasons have included collaborations with leading soloists and local artists such as Chorus pro Musica and Underground Railway Theater, and family concerts performed as part of Boston's First Night celebration, as well as two appearances in Bank of America Celebrity Series concerts with guest conductor Robert Kapilow. The NEP was Orchestra in Residence at Framingham State College for eleven years and is currently celebrating its eleventh season as Orchestra in Residence at Simmons College in Boston.
