Huntington Theatre Company

The Huntington Theatre Company is Boston's largest and most popular theatre company. Reaching an annual audience of over 130,000, the Huntington is renowned for staging world-class productions with spectacular production values. The Huntington produces seven plays each season, including premieres by rising literary stars as well as Pulitzer Prize, Academy Award, and Tony Award-winning writers, and has transferred more productions to Broadway than any other theatre in Boston.

Directions and Parking

Boston University Theatre
MBTA: Green Line to Symphony station. Walk outbound down Huntington Ave. and the B.U. Theatre is on the left. OR Orange Line to Mass. Ave. station. Turn left out of the station and continue down Mass. Ave. for 2 blocks. Turn left on Huntington Ave. The B.U. Theatre is on the left.

Driving: Storrow Drive to the Fenway exit. Boylston St. (inbound) to Westland Ave. Right onto Mass. Ave. for one block (past Symphony Hall). Right onto Huntington Ave. The theatre is on the left.

The Calderwood Pavilion
MBTA: Orange Line to Back Bay station OR Green Line to Copley Square station.

Driving: Take I-93 South into Boston, exit onto Storrow Drive. Take the Copley Square exit on your left. At the light make a left onto Beacon Street and a quick right, following the path of all traffic, onto Arlington Street. Follow Arlington for approximately one-half (1/2) mile, crossing over the highway into the South End. Turn right onto Tremont Street at the light in front of the CVS. The Calderwood Pavilion is on your right at 527 Tremont Street.

      I have long loved the music to Candide, but never saw a production before last Saturday (10/8). This was a wonderful production! We loved the low-tech simplicity of the sets. The performances were overall very good with special shout outs for Candide, Cunegonde and The Old Woman. Although I have no basis for comparison with any of the previous incarnations of Candide, the story as adapted by Mary Zimmerman is really enjoyable. There were occasions when the various people narrating could not be understood and I longed for more orchestra for the finale. Otherwise, it's a great production - great way to spend your entertainment dollars! Collapse

      It was certainly far from "phenomenal" as advertised. Sitting at the balcony, which at 1/2 price is already $50.00 ($100.00 for THOSE , SEATS, 3 rows from the back???, no way), one cannot hear... Expand

Sitting at the balcony, which at 1/2 price is already $50.00 ($100.00 for THOSE , SEATS, 3 rows from the back???, no way), one cannot hear most of the dialogue. At the very least, for wordy plays and music like this, supertitles are a MUST!!! I am a Bernstein fan but my husband and I left the theater very annoyed at half time. It was hopeless. Too bad, because the company was clearly very good. Collapse

      Great acting, inventive sets and costumes, and a whole lot of fun. Not enough advertising for this wonderful company which sold out in NYC and had empty seats here in Boston in a smaller theatre.

      I stumbled into this production as a Huntington subscriber, and was blown away. This high-energy Comedy of Errors by the all-male British Shakespeare company Propeller was completely original and highly entertaining from start to finish. Almost every word of the play was there, plus musical touches and audience participation. I got home and e-mailed all my Shakespeare-reading friends to go, quick. But this production, like the ART's recent Shakespeare versions, will entrance 20-somethings too. (Don't bring young kids, though, unless you want to answer a lot of embarrassing questions.)       I give the cast credit: they really tried ... but they had nothing to work with. This is a play about nothing, that goes no where, and leaves you feeling flat. So what if the kids are gay ... how... Expand

      I give the cast credit: they really tried ... but they had nothing to work with. This is a play about nothing, that goes no where, and leaves you feeling flat. So what if the kids are gay ... how does that become a meaningful element? (It doesn't). And much is made, in fact the entire 'drama', centers around the fact that [SPOILER] the father was in a car accident ... but he doesn't die from the car accident. So, all of that is very distracting ... but distracting from what? In the end, the story is too shallow to carry any major themes. And the comedy ... well, more like vaudeville than real, talented comedy. Collapse
