Handel and Haydn Society

The Handel and Haydn Society is a professional chorus and period instrument orchestra and an internationally recognized leader in the field of Historically Informed Performance. Founded in Boston in 1815, the Society is the oldest continuously performing arts organization in the United States, with a long history of innovation: it gave the American premieres of Handel's Messiah (1818), Haydn's The Creation (1819), Verdi's Requiem (1878), Bach's Mass in B Minor (1887), and Bach's St. Matthew Passion (1889). The Society today, under the leadership of Artistic Director designate Harry Christophers, Artistic Advisor Sir Roger Norrington, Principal Conductor Grant Llewellyn, and Conductor Laureate Christopher Hogwood, is committed to its mission "to perform Baroque and Classical music at the highest levels of artistic excellence and to share that music with as large and diverse an audience as possible." The Massachusetts Cultural Council has lauded the organization for its "willingness to take risks and explore new musical horizons."

    10/12/12- 10/14/12	Bach Magnificat Symphony Hall Bach Magnificat Presented by Handel and Haydn Society at Symphony Hall October 12-October 14, 2012 H&H opens the 2012-2013 Season with Harry Christophers conducting the glorious Bach Magnificat, featuring the Handel and Haydn Society's Chorus. Among other works by the master composer featured on the program are the Orchestral Suite No. 3, which contains the “Air on a G String,” and Sinfonias from Cantatas 18 and 75, never before performed by H&H.

Considered one of the greatest works of the 18th century, Jupiter foreshadows the work of Beethoven.

Audience favorite John Finney, Associate Conductor and Chorusmaster, leads the Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus in a moving rendition of this holiday treasure.
    01/25/13- 01/27/13	Purcell The Indian Queen NEC's Jordan Hall Purcell The Indian Queen Presented by Handel and Haydn Society at NEC's Jordan Hall January 25-January 27, 2013 Henry Purcell’s last major work, The Indian Queen, receives special treatment in this compelling interpretation by Harry Christophers and the Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus. Last performed by H&H in 1995, this semi-opera surrounds Queen Zempoalla of Mexico and focuses on her resistance against Montezuma’s invading Peruvian army. Adapted from John Dryden and Sir Robert Howard’s 1664 play, Henry’s brother Daniel completed the opera after his death.
    02/22/13- 02/24/13	Haydn in Paris Symphony Hall Haydn in Paris Presented by Handel and Haydn Society at Symphony Hall February 22-February 24, 2013 Under Harry Christophers’ expert hands, Haydn comes to life in a program that showcases one of his Paris Symphonies, The Bear, a festive and jubilant work commissioned by a Parisian orchestra in the 1780s. H&H’s fiery and expressive Concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky returns to the spotlight after the smashing success of her Vivaldi The Four Seasons performances in 2012.

      Probably the best, most intense performance of the Mozart g minor symphony I've seen. The orchestra is so in sync it was pure joy. My only complaint is the pianist for the Mozart piano concerto... Expand

      Probably the best, most intense performance of the Mozart g minor symphony I've seen. The orchestra is so in sync it was pure joy. My only complaint is the pianist for the Mozart piano concerto #22. The tempos were fast and in many of the runs and arpeggios, he seemed to rush through them technically - muffled and without emphasizing the key landing points. Many missed opportunities in the second movement as well. Collapse
