With her “Shirley, Vt.” triptych, playwright Annie Baker is fast establishing herself as the bard of small-town New England. Her work traffics in a particular quasi-realistic, slow-paced style, one that’s as initially maddening as it is ultimately rewarding.

“The Aliens,” Baker’s third play in a series set in the fictional Vermont town, opens with a long, antsy stretch of silence. Baker and Shawn LaCount, the director of Company One’s production, seem to be daring someone to blurt something out. Collapse
