Organization

Actors' Shakespeare Project
(ASP) began with an informal gathering of actors in November 2003. Benjamin Evett, a 20-year veteran of the American Repertory Theatre, invited a group of about a dozen actors, all of them seasoned professionals with extensive careers in theater and as educators to a meeting at his house. He proposed starting a company of actors dedicated to Shakespeare and focused on the language, the action, the characters - no high concept productions, no elaborate sets and costumes, no special effects. Just the play, brought to audiences by the best actors available, in an intimate setting that would probably not be a conventional theater, but a place that would enhance the meaning of the play and bring the work to new audiences in communities around Boston.

Event Name: The Hotel Nepenthe
"brilliant, avante garde theater"
Review posted by: theatergoerbill from Cambridge, Feb 28, 2011
Mysterious, bewildering and witty, The Hotel Nepenthe is a fabulous evening of live theater in an intimate venue. ASP and John Kuntz have come up with yet another hit. But don't expect a tidy... Expand

"Not quite up to par"
Review posted by: SR from Cambridge, MA, Nov 08, 2010
I really like Shakespeare shows, but this one wasn't as good as it could have been. It was often hard to understand what the characters were saying. Also, I'm not a fan of modern costume. It's set in... Expand

"Great production"
Review posted by: Martin from Brookline, MA, Nov 08, 2010
The play was really terrific in so many aspects. The acting, staging and the fantastically clever use of the theater...all contributed to a really wonderful production.

"Enjoyable!"
Review posted by: Falstaff's Tenderfoot from Boston, MA, Nov 08, 2010
Thank you for putting on the show. I enjoyed the characters and their performance. The staging, transition of scenes, and having a soda break (shakespeare is enjoyed more when caffeinated above the... Expand

The performance I was to attend was cancelled & the ASP had not responded to my call for scheduling a new date. This has been a frustrating experience!

"Very entertaining!"
Review posted by: Jantique from Brighton, MA, USA, Earth, Oct 12, 2010
I very much enjoyed Henry IV, I. It was clear and easy to understand. Hal was great, but I think Hotspur stole the show! The woman next to me had no familiarity with the play, and she enjoyed it also.... Expand

"Timon of Athens"
Review posted by: Ron from Boston, MA, May 24, 2010
This is a rare production of a largely overlooked Shakespeare play. This production helps explain why it isn't done more often. There isn't the same poetry as a King Lear or a Hamlet and there's not... Expand

Event Name: The Taming of the Shrew
"Loved the Shrew!"
Review posted by: Susan W from Boxborough, MA, Oct 19, 2009
This production is fresh, inventive, and thoroughly captivating. The strong players bring Shakespeare's farce to life with the frivolity and physicality it deserves. I HIGHLY recommend ACP's Shrew.... Expand
