      A superb concert, the program wonderfully conceived and the performance unbeatable. Gershwin's "An American in Paris" was a thrilling opening piece that well merited the audience's sustained applause... Expand

      A superb concert, the program wonderfully conceived and the performance unbeatable. Gershwin's "An American in Paris" was a thrilling opening piece that well merited the audience's sustained applause and cheers at its conclusion. The correspondences between it and Ravel's "Concerto in G Major for Piano and Orchestra," with Stephen Drury as the pianist, were revealing. The concluding piece, Debussy's "La Mer" was beautifully and sensitively played. The Boston Philharmonic is a splendid orchestra intellectually and emotionally led by a top-notch director, Benjamin Zander. Collapse
