Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology

The Peabody Museum is the region's principle world cultures museum, with vast collections from North America, ancient Mesoamerica, Africa, and Oceania. Changing exhibits explore human societies and culture from prehistory to the present. Experience the Plains Indian wars from the Lakota perspective, marvel at the spectacular wall paintings of the Maya, Moche, and American southwest, and explore the many island cultures of the Pacific.

    Terrible and Charismatic Waste Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology Terrible and Charismatic Waste Presented by Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology at Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology February 9, 2012 Lecture by Max Liboiron, ABD, Department of Media, Culture and Communication, New York University; Regional Co-Director of the Plastic Pollution Coalition. In 2001, plastic outweighed plankton in the Pacific Ocean by six to one. Today, that ratio is thirty-six to one. Ocean plastics are outpacing the knowledge and methods designed to investigate and manage them.

    Exhibition: Wiyohpiyata: Lakota Images of the Contested West Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology Exhibition: Wiyohpiyata: Lakota Images of the Contested West Presented by Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology at Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology May 12, 2009-December 30, 2013 Wiyohpiyata: Lakota Images of the Contested West explores the meanings of a recently discovered nineteenth-century "artist's book," in the collection of Houghton Library, that had been recovered from the Little Big Horn battlefield after Custer's defeat in 1876. The exhibit presents colored drawings by Plains Indian warriors from the book with historic Lakota objects from the Peabody's collections.

February 24th is Mexican Flag Day. Come explore the history of the flag and the Aztec origin of the eagle and the cactus in the flag’s coat of arms. Enjoy the story of the founding of Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City, and learn more about the Mexica people. And don’t miss the make-and-take-home project! Recommended for ages 5 and up accompanied by an adult
