Zeitgeist Stage Company

Zeitgeist Stage Company aims to explore contemporary plays and rediscover historic works that reflect the mixture of comedy and drama inherent in contemporary life. Towards this goal, the Company plans to produce works by English-language playwrights as well as translations of works from international writers.

      This production takes the complex and potentially boring topic of crooked accounting and a warped corporate culture and turns it into gripping drama. Kudos especially go to Victor Shopov for playing... Expand

      This production takes the complex and potentially boring topic of crooked accounting and a warped corporate culture and turns it into gripping drama. Kudos especially go to Victor Shopov for playing Jeff Skilling, Enron's President, as being every bit as arrogant, unethical, and charismatic as he was in real life. For my money, Bill Salem, the actor playing Ken Lay, Enron's CEO, goes overboard and makes Lay seem too much like a cartoonish Texas yahoo. The cast is suprisingly large for a production on a relatively small stage, but the director uses the space effectively in both the larger and smaller scenes. In the wake of the ongoing financial crisis that is like Enron raised to the hundredth power, it's hard to imagine a more timely play. Be sure to catch this New England premier--at this ticket price, the show is a genuine bargain. Collapse

      Great performance by the believable drunk guy. Some funny lines. The story was a bit uneven, especially the connection with the bartender. I couldn't quite understand his role in the play. But... Expand

      Alan Ayckbourn is a playwright who has grown on me by growing out of himself. At least his most recent plays, such as 2004’s “Private Fears in Public Places,” represent a refreshingly haiku-esque departure from the intricately constructed, large scale semi-farces he is most identified with, such as “The Norman Conquests” and “House & Garden.” Popular as these shows have been, here and aboard, they have always struck me, despite their ambition, as thin comic gruel, partly because they fall somewhere in-between farce and sit-com. “Private Fears” suggests Ayckbourn has left that unsatisfying comic netherworld (perhaps after 70 scripts he has finally exhausted it) and is writing plays that, to their credit, fit neither category.
