Joe Raia grew up in Lexington, MA, and graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston where he studied saxophone and clarinet. A stalwart in the New England blues, R&B and jazz scene, he has performed with many Boston Music Awards winners and nominees, Boston Battle of the Blues Bands winners, and has performed in 11 countries in North America and Europe. In addition to teaching saxophone at WCMS, he is also a woodwind instructor for the Wellesley Public Schools.

Ladyhips was started by guitarist Mike Dipanfilo and bassist Sean Rubin. After going to the Hartt School of Music for a few years, they met a transfer student and jazz drummer Sam Horan and freshman and jazz pianist Paul Philippone. After playing and jamming for countless hours and realizing the group had some serious musical chemistry, the band was created.
