The center of Newton is approximately seven miles from downtown Boston, although Newton abuts Boston and several of its neighborhoods. Newton was originally settled in 1630 as a part of Cambridge, the home of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Newton was incorporated in 1688.
