Freeport [No. 004]: Peter Hutton
Presented by Peabody Essex Museum at Peabody Essex Museum
Peter Hutton has spent nearly 40 years voyaging across the world, often by cargo ship, to create meditative, intimate and luminously photographed film studies of place. At Sea (2007) depicts the life cycle of a container ship - from mechanized construction in Korean shipyards, to a journey across the Atlantic and ending with the manual labor of ship breakers in Bangladesh. The title of the film evokes a loss of perspective, a metaphor born from the experience of a sea journey and its ability to strip us of our sense of scale, time and distance -- something that maritime artists have long sought to depict.

A Gilded and Heartbreaking Life: The Photographs of Clover Adams, 1883-1885
Presented by Massachusetts Historical Society
In May 1883, Clover Adams, a descendant of Boston’s Sturgis and Hooper families and the wife of the historian Henry Adams, picked up her camera and began taking photographs—of her husband, of afternoons at the beach on Boston’s North Shore, and of eminent friends who frequented the Adamses’ home on Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C. Examples of these photographs will be on exhibit 9 February through 2 June at the MHS. Based on Natalie Dykstra’s book, Clover Adams: A Gilded and Heartbreaking Life, to be published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in February 2012, the exhibition showcases Clover’s striking photographs, many of which have not been seen before publicly. It also highlights Clover’s many letters, the notebook she used to record the chronology and technical aspects of her photographs, as well as Henry’s letters, and other family materials.

Move Me
Presented by Cambridge Arts Council
MOVE ME, is a “pop up” art project that travels through the streets of Cambridge for two weeks this spring in conjunction with an exhibition in the CAC Gallery (344 Broadway, 2nd Fl., Cambridge) from April 2 through June 15, 2012. The project investigates themes of immigration, national identity, and life transitions through the metaphor of animal migration. The project features a “performance” of wrapped vehicles with images of migrating animals from Paul's work, creating a metaphorical skin moving through the streets of Cambridge. The vehicles "pop up" in unexpected places to both surprise viewers and stimulate a community dialogue about boundaries, borders and barriers – both real and perceived. Inspired by artist Roberta Paul’s travels to the Serengeti in Tanzania, Africa, this multifaceted event features a six-week gallery exhibition at the CAC Gallery.

Charline von Heyl
Presented by Institute of Contemporary Art /Boston (ICA) at Institute of Contemporary Art /Boston (ICA)
This March, the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA) opens the first U.S. museum survey of Charline von Heyl, a compelling and important artist whose work offers new ideas and possibilities for painting, and demonstrates the medium’s continued relevance in contemporary art. Von Heyl’s canvases are not abstractions of objects or figures; instead, she is interested in inventing a new image that has not yet been seen and that “stands for itself as a fact.” With their intentional confusion of foreground and background, their dynamic energy, and their contradictions and reversals, these paintings require (and desire) careful looking, but refuse to yield to the impulse to name, identify, or define. Organized by ICA Senior Curator Jenelle Porter, Charline von Heyl includes 12 paintings and two sets of collage-based works on paper tracing the development of von Heyl’s work over the past five years. The exhibition is on view at the ICA from March 21 through July 15, 2012.
Von Heyl describes the sensation she seeks to create in her work: “It is about the feeling that a painting, or any work of art, can give—when you can’t stop looking because there is something that you want to find out, that you want to understand…. Good paintings have this tantalizing quality. And once you turn around, you absolutely cannot recapture them. They leave a hole in the mind, a longing.”

Forgotten Chapters of Boston’s Literary History
Presented by Boston Public Library at Boston Public Library
Between the Revolution and the Civil War, Boston was the preeminent center of literary creativity in the United States. Forgotten Chapters, an exhibition developed by Boston College faculty, students, and staff, explores stories about Boston’s literary history that have faded from memory. Drawing on the special collections of the Boston Public Library, Massachusetts Historical Society, and American Antiquarian Society, the exhibition focuses on the work of authors and editors, takes a fresh look at poems published in early magazines, and walks the streets of Boston in the heyday of its literary achievement, 1794-1860. A complementary exhibition focusing on the first seasons of the Federal Street Theatre is on view at the Massachusetts Historical Society (1154 Boylston Street).

Jay Bolotin: The Jackleg Testament
Presented by Smith College Museum of Art at Smith College Museum of Art
“The Jackleg Testament Part I: Jack and Eve” is a one-of-a-kind animated, operatic film derived from the crisply styled woodcuts of artist, composer, and performer Jay Bolotin. The film, which reinterprets the story of Adam and Eve as a dark, provocative tale in which Eve is lured from the Garden of Eden by a Jack-in-the-Box, is accompanied by the 40 woodcuts used by the artist to create the images in the film.

Josiah McElheny: Some Pictures of the Infinite
Presented by Institute of Contemporary Art /Boston (ICA) at Institute of Contemporary Art /Boston (ICA)
Josiah McElheny uses the ancient and labor intensive medium of glass to create objects of exceptional beauty and formal sophistication. An artist of diverse interests, McElheny draws on art history, politics, and cosmology to encode his glassworks with information, turning these exquisite objects into repositories of meaning. A mid-career survey of the artist’s work, Josiah McElheny: Some Pictures of Infinity traces the artist’s investigations into the representation of time and space, and in particular, the concept of infinity. Infinity is a spatial conundrum that quickly turns into a philosophical problem: how does one represent the unrepresentable? What images have humans used over time to connote the mathematical realities of the boundlessness of space and time? And how might those images and ideas reflect psychological states or perceptions of history?
McElheny explores this constellation of ideas via his re-creation of the earliest extant glass fragments in an investigation of archeological time, the use of mise en abmye as a means of visualizing infinity, and through recent works that aestheticize the Big Bang and recall mid-century design objects. A highlight of the exhibition is Island Universe (2008), an installation of five, large-scale, chrome and glass sculptures that look to have exploded mid-air. Scientifically accurate models of Big Bang theory, the sculptures in Island Universe represent the apotheosis of McElheny's effort to picture infinity and give an abstract concept materiality and visual form. The questions of infinity, utopia, and modernism that McElheny examines through this and his other works are not the kind one typically associates with craft production, and yet it is through the history of glass that McElheny has traced this historical line of inquiry.
Organized by ICA Chief Curator Helen Molesworth, Josiah McElheny: Some Pictures of Infinity features approximately 14 works, including sculpture, installation, film, photography and performance.

You'll be surprised to learn who was involved in promoting "terrorist acts" against Great Britain as the American Revolution played out on Boston waters. Tall Ships are in Boston this summer, so take in the juicy history of Boston's harbor on this 90 minute walking tour with an 18th century costumed Freedom Trail Foundation guide. It's American history, but not the same old story.
Tour departs from BosTix Booth at Faneuil Hall.

Art Since the Mid-20th Century
Presented by Worcester Art Museum at Worcester Art Museum
A new installation of the Museum's collection of art since the mid-20th century features approximately fifty works of art displayed in renovated galleries, and presented in three thematic installations: The Persistence of Abstraction, Revivals of Figuration and Portraiture, and Cultural Signs.
This presentation chronicles the past seven decades as still-evolving chapters which illustrate how artists across disciplines, generations, and geographies respond to the experiences of their time by revising the visual languages and genres they have inherited. The integration of all media offers an encounter that foregrounds how materials are often signifiers of meaning, demonstrating how an artist's choice of medium can be a critical conceptual strategy in the art-making process.
Examples from mid-century through the 1970s, including iconic works by Grace Hartigan, Alex Katz, Ellsworth Kelly, Franz Kline, Robert Matta, Joan Mitchell, Louise Nevelson, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Tom Wesselmann provide visitors with landmarks from which to explore more recent contributions by artists including Louise Bourgeois, Chuck Close, Tony Feher, Annette Lemieux, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Beatriz Milhazes, Elizabeth Murray, Nam June Paik, Sigmar Polke, Doris Salcedo, Cindy Sherman, Yinka Shonibare, and Kiki Smith.
In conjunction with this focus on the Museum's holdings from the late 20th century, a major stripe painting from 1967 by Kenneth Noland, one of the central figures of Color Field painting, is on view in the Museum's library. Also in the collection, Bill Viola's Union, a color video diptych from 2000, will remain on view in the Medieval gallery.

Re-View
Presented by Harvard Art Museums at Harvard Art Museums/Arthur M. Sackler Museum
This survey features a selection of over 600 objects drawn from the collections of the Fogg, Busch-Reisinger, and Arthur M. Sackler museums that reflects the diversity and richness of the Harvard Art Museums' holdings. Well-known objects are included alongside rarely displayed works in thematic gallery spaces: European and American art since 1900 is on the first floor, Islamic and Asian art is on the second floor, and the fourth floor features Western art from antiquity to the turn of the last century. Re-View represents a powerful distillation of the collection, fulfilling a wish to make available important works—some of them familiar highlights and many of them integral to the Art Museums' core mission of teaching and research.
Re-View is on long-term display at the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at 485 Broadway while the Art Museums' building at 32 Quincy Street—the former home of the Fogg and Busch-Reisinger—is closed for renovation. This major renovation and expansion project, designed by architect Renzo Piano, with completion anticipated in 2013, will unite the three museums in a single state-of-the-art facility.
Re-View has been made possible by a generous grant from the NBT Charitable Trust, as well as the Art Museums’ Alexander S., Robert L., and Bruce A. Beal Exhibition Fund; Anthony and Celeste Meier Exhibitions Fund; and Charlotte F. and Irving W. Rabb Exhibition Fund.

The Contemporary Sculpture Path at Forest Hills
Presented by Forest Hills Educational Trust at Forest Hills Cemetery
Long before Boston had public parks, Forest Hills Cemetery was created to offer visitors a special place where they could enjoy a magnificent landscape while remembering friends and family. Sculpture became an essential feature of this environment, as people commissioned the great artists of their day as well as local artisans to create memorials. Today, Forest Hills is an open air museum, home to one of America’s finest collections of Victorian sculpture.
While Forest Hills is an important historic site, it is not frozen in time. It continues to evolve in ways that reflect the spirit of contemporary society. Our Victorian sculpture collection was modern in its day, and the Trustees of Forest Hills have launched The Sculpture Path to welcome the work of contemporary artists into this unique setting. The Path leads from the oldest parts of the Cemetery to newer areas where burials still take place.
We plan to continue developing the Path over time, exhibiting contemporary sculpture which expresses the diverse interests and aesthetics of 21st century Boston, much as our older sculpture reflects the sensibility and ideals of the 19th and early 20th centuries. We invite you to explore and enjoy the many dimensions of Forest Hills — history, art, and nature — and to refresh your spirit in this beautiful setting!
