The Rare Plants of Massachusetts
Presented by Grow Native Massachusetts
Bryan Connolly, Massachusetts State Botanist. From its calcareous cobbles to its coastal plains, Massachusetts has a broad diversity of eco-regions and is home to 1,814 species of native plants. Of these, 254 (or 14%) are vulnerable to extinction and protected by the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act. Even more are species of conservation concern. Tonight, we get a valuable overview of these many vulnerable plants and the threats they face. We have significant challenges ahead of us if we are to ensure their survival. Bryan Connolly is the State Botanist for the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program.

New Photographic Exhibit: Life in the Extreme Deep - Harvard Museum of Natural History
Presented by Harvard Museum of Natural History at Harvard Museum of Natural History
Harvard Museum of Natural History announces a new photographic exhibit opening in the museum lobby on October 12, showcasing the research of Harvard’s Loeb Associate Professor of Natural Sciences Peter R. Girguis and stunning deep-sea photographs by scientists who work in the field with Professor Girguis. Life in the Extreme Deep will remain on display through June 2012.
In conjunction with the photographic exhibit, the museum will offer a lecture by Harvard biologist Peter Girguis on Wednesday October 12 at 6:30 pm. Girguis will discuss issues surrounding the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill and what biologists are doing to understand how natural “oil-eating” microbes are able to aid in the cleanup. A reception in the exhibit will follow the talk. Tickets are free to museum members and $10 others. For descriptions of all museum events, see http://www.hmnh.harvard.edu/lectures_and_special_events/index.php.
The Harvard Museum of Natural History is located at 26 Oxford Street, a 7-8 minute walk through historic Harvard Yard from the Harvard Square T station. The Museum is handicapped accessible. More than 192,000 visitors a year make the museum the University’s most visited.

Landscape Lecture Series: Ken Smith, Landscape Architect
Presented by Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum at Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Organized by Consulting Curator of Landscape Charles Waldheim/Urban Agency, the inaugural Landscape Lectures will address how landscape design has changed the shape of American cities and open spaces in recent years, representing a shift in the way designers approach the challenges of urban life.
“The Landscape Lectures will focus on contemporary issues in urban landscape design and the renewal of our connection with the environment and with land itself,” said Waldheim. “The transformative work of six leading practitioners of contemporary landscape architecture will shed light on the most relevant topics in urban landscape design.”
The opening lecture will be presented by Peter Walker, a significant figure in the field of landscape architecture for more than five decades. His career includes a wide range of projects that demonstrate a specific concern for urban and environmental issues. He recently completed work on the 9/11 Memorial in New York City. Other speakers in the series include Michael Van Valkenburgh, Ken Smith, Martha Schwartz, James Corner, and George Hargreaves.

Mollusks: Shelled Masters of the Marine Realm
Presented by Harvard Museum of Natural History at Harvard Museum of Natural History
Mollusks: Shelled Masters of the Marine Realm, a new exhibition opening February 18, 2012 at Harvard Museum of Natural History, will explore mollusks' amazing diversity and feature recent discoveries about their evolutionary history. Mollusks are amazingly varied in both size and anatomical structure, as well as in their behaviors and habitats. First appearing in the fossil record in the Cambrian period more than 500 million years ago, mollusks include the brainy cephalopods such as octopus and squid; the abundant gastropods, creatures that produce a single shell, such as snails; as well as the numerous bivalves, such as oysters, clams and mussels, that are deliciously edible to humans, and often prized for their shells.
On Thursday February 16, the Mollusks exhibition opening lecture will be presented by Gonzalo Giribet, Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Curator of Invertebrates in the Museum of Comparative Zoology. Giribet will explore how scientists are mapping the Mollusca genetic family tree, to learn how they’ve adapted, survived and thrived since the pre-Cambrian era and to understand their incredibly adaptive and complex biology. The 6 pm lecture will be free and open to the public.
